With all the compassion to those he has hurt, the person who acts like such a nutcase as him, must've been very disturbed and unhappy themself. Maybe his being so crazy had some connection to head injury/brain damage he'd been subject to?Dioufy wrote:It's a shame, but the guy was a prick. The DA in his native country also recommended that he be put in jail for harassing his wife - that was turned down. Hope the judicial system there feel proud.
Is anyone really surprised he ended up killing her?
And what did Valero not have to be unhappy about? Beautiful wife, youth, wealth and being a world-wide icon to millions of people. Not saying he wasn't unhappy, but I don't know why he would be. I would give my arms to have the talent and wealth of him.

All sad etc ..
But what a `myth` and `what if` Valero will now become in boxing history...

Re: Edwin Valero found dead
I assume he came from a poverty stricken background and some people just simply cannot handle all the money, power and fame once they have it. There is also going to be debates on this motorbike accident and the metal plate in his head. Did this affect his behaviour? Has he always had a mental illness that has been covered up or missed? Should these commissions all over the world have been sanctioning him to fight? I can see all of this being argued for a long time.Dioufy wrote:The DA in his native country also recommended that he be put in jail for harassing his wife - that was turned down. I do find it strange that medical opinion across the world is so far apart that you can fight in one country and not the other. In some cases it could just be down to someone in authority who just doesn't place that much emphasis on a fighters health.
Re: Edwin Valero found dead
I rather suspect it was something that was installed in him a long long time ago.TempleSlave wrote:Dioufy wrote:It's a shame, but the guy was a prick. You should never batter your misses, or even kill her, unless she stops you watching the Bayern Munich/Man Utd tie, like mine nearly did.

this business is a shocking as it is sad.
whilst I do have a lot of pity for his missus and the kids, as crass as it may sound with them in a far off land far removed from my own life, I do also have a morsal of sympathy for the man himself. He did not sound like a "well" human being. I think he had problems/ maybe experiences, that most of us simply don't have and know nothing about.
Re: Edwin Valero found dead
I'm not going to judge Valero as a person. I feel very much for his children and the family of his wife but I dont feel any less sorry for him or for the tragedy as a whole.
I was extremely cynical about mental illness in the past, but when Darren Sutherland passed away I swore (and have maintained) that I'd be more respectful towards mental illnesses or issues, especially when I know very little about a particular case.

Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. I hope he suffered and it wasn't quick.
It is such a shame he had to kill his wife first though, the coward.
R.I.P. Jennifer, and my thoughts are with the children.

Re: Edwin Valero found dead
I'm in shock. I really liked Valero as a boxer. He obviously had very serious issues. I can only hope their children will be OK. :(
Re: Edwin Valero found dead
you could argue his boxing career was as erratic as his life... i mean, who the hell gets into the ring with the sole intent of taking out his opponent in the 1st round or 2........not exactly normal is it?? And that's in the contained environs of a boxing ring......but outside it, who knows who was?
Re: Edwin Valero found dead
To call a dead man a prick hours after he dies is nothing short of crass. To suggest it would be better if he suffered a prolonged death is just a bit sick to be honest.chrisfinch wrote:Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. I hope he suffered and it wasn't quick.

was he really a prick or rather someone who lost a battle with mental illness and tragically took someone down with him?chrisfinch wrote:Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. I hope he suffered and it wasn't quick.

Just out of curiosity, I'm assuming this is the family?

Re: Edwin Valero found dead
poor kids :(
Re: Edwin Valero found dead
Doesn't really matter. He battered his wife. And took the mother of his children away from them, possibly subjecting them to a life filled with mental health issues. fornicating scum.frankwarrenfan wrote:was he really a prick or rather someone who lost a battle with mental illness and tragically took someone down with him?chrisfinch wrote:Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. tragic story.
the guy clearly needed help before any of this.
should have been sectioned after the assault on his wife.

of course it matters, especially as someone will eventually have to explain to his grown-up kids why their father did what he did!

There is a time and a place mate and this isn`t it. I would never try to defend what he did, as it is horrific, but to make a comment like that is on the edge.chrisfinch wrote:Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. I hope he suffered and it wasn't quick.

Loopy or not, he beat up his family and murdered his wife. He might not have been all there, but presuming he pulled the trigger, that's unforgivable.frankwarrenfan wrote:was he really a prick or rather someone who lost a battle with mental illness and tragically took someone down with him?chrisfinch wrote:Good riddance if the prick actually did murder his wife. Sorry but I totally disagree. Presuming he did kill his wife, which seems 95% certain why the hell should we take it easy on him just because he had the decency to kill himself afterwards?forcefraser wrote:There is a time and a place mate and this isn`t it. Everyone would be on here calling him every name under the sun if he was found guilty of killing her, and rightfully so, but the fact he killed himself afterwards doesn't take away from what he did.
Enough of that, I hope the kids are well taken care of and aren't too scarred by what has happened.

Truly shocking story. What a tragedy.

Its difficult conversing about mental illness with someone who uses phrases like 'loopy' and 'not all there' to describe a man with mental issues who has just died.
I think I'll just agree to differ!

Re: Edwin Valero found dead
This is a sad, horrible and tragic story. In the perfect world, Valero should have had his license revoked and gone to see a psychiatrist or had counselling over his brain injuries and the damage he was doing to his family. People who say that his brain damage had nothing to do with his behaviour would find themselves at odds with more or less every neurosurgeon on this planet. People with brain injury often divulge in shocking, sometimes repugnant and criminal behaviour usually related to sex offences. He would have probably got off on this charge on that alone.
But it is not like he could retire and sort himself out, he would go back to being a nobody if he gave up the one thing that made him a somebody, you can bet as a world super featherweight and lightweight champion he didn't make that sort of money where he could have retired and it is not like a guy with his background, lack of education and brain damage would have spent his life mowing the lawn in peace. He needed boxing more than anything to keep his life in some kind of order.
People might say about his wife and castigate her for not moving away from a violent brute but again - she probably came from poverty and where is she going to go? A life with a violent, mentally damaged individual who is famous and comparably rich is probably better than poverty - especially with two kids.
A sad and horrible tale. Valero commiting suicide brings no solace to me personally - my condolences go out to all the families concerned.

The whole thing is a terrible tragedy.I remeber articles on him from years ago and the impression was, he weas a good bloke.I just wonder what sort of impact the brain damage had on his mood swings -leading to a personality change. My heart goes out to everyone concerned.
