Probably not a repeat then. In the US they had the first episode Monday 7th, second on Thursday 10th and third on Sunday 13th and now its regularly on sunday nights. ITV2 must have picked it up with rights to broadcast on a weeks delay I would say.DK2112 wrote:Just checked my TV guide, ITV2 have The Contender in a slot this coming Thursday night. You reckon this is the repeat of tonights?
ITV2 are showing The Contender.

I really enjoyed the show, even Stallone seems to be good for it! But was getting a little frustrated with all of the slo-mo and crowd shots in the fight at the end, but yeah I guess I understand the reasons.
I was really surprised Gomez one, all the talk was that he was a weak boxer and the other guy great, so maybe it was a set up for American Drama, but I dont think so just the little guy had more desire and on the day more skills, good defense too.

I accidentally found out the results of the second and third box of'fs this luch time - the next two shows are therefore going to be slightly anti-climatic for me!
Am I right in thinking that all of this show (possibly excluding the final) was recorded several months ago, but the results of the matches are only being released as and when they are aired on TV in America?!
Is this the first time that the results of professional matches have been withheld for several months or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

They were boxed in august/september. And I bet several of them are just waiting for the show to end so that they can resume their career again.TerribleTerry wrote:I accidentally found out the results of the second and third box of'fs this luch time - the next two shows are therefore going to be slightly anti-climatic for me!

I think they're all getting paid $1500 a week until the show has finished. I'm sure that'll be more, on average, than they were getting beforehand, from ring earnings. Fighters of that standard don't get paid much in the states.Freiheit wrote:They were boxed in august/september. Have to say I was fairly disapointed with it... far too Hollywoody as has already been said... at times I felt like I was watching a gameshow!... I mean what was the idea with not showing the whole fight???.... I'm surprised more people haven't commented on this... the actual coverage of the fight was extremely poor... surely the fight is what it should be all about!.... good idea overall but could have been done much better.... more style than substance sadly.

Only just watched Thursday's repeat so i've been avoiding this thread until now.
No i thought that too! If he had said he was MAB's cousin i wouldn't have doubted it for a second. Some slick moves too.
From the first intros i was groaning as it seemed so corny in that uniquely American way. But when it got into it i enjoyed it.
It is a shame they don't show the whole fights. I mean the show is 1 and a half hours and the bouts are only 5 rounders.
I don't mind the rest of the time being used up building the tension and getting into the fighters background but it seemed a little odd to scrimp on the actual boxing.
I suppose considering the egos Stallone and SRL could have they kept there mugs out of it admirably. Actually i was surprised how little it is 'about' them. I wouldn't mind hearing more from SRL (but maybe the 1st episode was more about introducing the fighters)
It's certainly more real than gameshow and like i said wouldn't mind the pure entertainment elements if it came down to a pure full length boxing match for the finale.
It would be good for casual viewers to get some sort of insight into the equivalent of a small hall/undercard bout.

Doubt they will show more boxing, the show seems geared towards the general public rather than the boxing fan. They seem more concerned about developing the characters in the show, so people will have some one to root for. I think the reasoning for them showing only highlights of the bouts is that any non boxing fans watching the show would get bored. They just want to see slam bang KOs andRocky style wars. They're not interested in slick defencive manouvers or counter punching. Shame tho.
