25 Years of National Silver Gloves History

Post by DCAmateurBoxing »

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up of a project that I'm working on. I am compiling the champions of all the National Silver Gloves Champions going back 25 years and will post them online in some kind of format. Pretty interesting to see some of the past champions who are not professionals. It's going to take me a while but I'll post the first year that I have in this thread just to show the format. Like I said it's going to take a while but if anyone has any questions on the info, just post here and I will TRY to answer. I have only hardcopy right now. . .

I fought at 139 in the 1994 Tournamenet. I lost my fight to some kid named ben rall I think. He was ranked number 5 in the country as a jo. It may have actually been in december 1993 but not sure. Courtney burton was abeast back then at 147. Does anybody have brackets or news article on this tournament?

Andre Ward - Hayward, CA 12/13 132lbs. runner-up (**Ward's last loss??)
My understanding was the last time Andre lost was when he was 10 or 11. Can you check on the above for accuracy? Great job, Cullen!

Thanks! My records have him losing to John Revish of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They used to publish all the rankings/results in a two color newsletter with photos of some of the boxers. That's what I have in the package that LP sent me. His bio says his last loss was in 1996 so it may have been a typo. I just emailed John and asked him so we will see what he says.

IIRC, his last loss was to Ernie Gonzales from Arizona at the Blue & Gold when he was either Jr. or Intermediate in (I'm pretty sure it was) 1996. Please post John's reply. :D

Yup your right. I was going through them all putting down the names that I recognized and also what they did that year. He was 5th. I don't know how you keep it all straight, but I know you know Brian and you were there. . .so I guess that one was easy. :D

As you already know, I beat Nonito Donaire in 1995, first round if I remember right. Won it that year. Then repeated and my little bro beat Anthony Peterson in the finals. We found my bros fight against Peterson. Still havent found my tapes of me beating Anthony Dirrell and Donaire. They both remember it though. I didn't know BJ flores won it that many times either.

Yes sir. We did find the tape of my brother Drew beating Anthony Peterson in the finals of the 1996 silver gloves. I can't find a single one of my tapes from the 1994 silver gloves all the way through 1998. Somehow how my little bro found his, a little mysterious how we only found his haha.. I am sure they will turn up though, one of these years haha.

February 7, 1998 at Lenexa, Kansas, National Silver Gloves...132 pounds Intermediate JO to John Revish (it's off to the left, about halfway down on the page)....notice that Chad Dawson lost in the finals the same day, at 132 senior JO to Julio Perez (I was in his corner)...other kids who fought on this day include Nonito Donaire, Raushee Warren, Gary Russel (Warren and Russel are on the back side of this paper), Jason Litzau, Timothy Bradley and Curtis Stevens...my boxer Sammy Vega, pictured on the bottom right, won the national title at 106 senior JO...

Ice, your boxing knowledge is amazing  I really don't know how you do it. I have that same record of that lost to Revish. The next year (1999) he won at 147lbs. in the 14/15 division that also included Andre Berto and Farrah Ennis. Juan Diaz won 139lbs in a field that included Tim Bradley.

In 2000, Andre Ward won at 156lbs. Donyil Livingston won at 165lbs. and Curtis Stevens won at 178lbs.
