Its not a matter of Magee wanting your title - it is s simple FACT that the BBBofC have called for purse bids for the fight.

You want a 60/40 split in favour to you for your British title - but you are happy to have a 50/50 split for the European Title shows me you do not have a lot of respect for the more lucrative and prestigious title and in addition you are trying to get Brian Magee on the cheap.

You rightly point out you are the British Champion and you want the monetary recognition for that - understandable - however you fail to recognise here that Brian Magee is the EUROPEAN champion and regardless of whether his title is on the line or not - if you beat him then that puts you in a very strong position indeed - sometimes to put yourself in that position then you have to pay the going rate and show the respect to the more prestigious champion.

Paul - we have history and I am trying to show you respect here - however - your post in my opinion pangs of arrogance at best and at worst a total lack of respect for Brian Magee and his status as the European Champion.

If you really want the fight you will compromise as I know Team Magee are willing to - they respect you as a viable challenge and know you are a good fighter.

Also look at the WORLD rankings for both of you - the winner of Smith/Magee is in a very strong postion and as such the word compromise comes to the fore.
You've taken my post totally wrong Spud. I was trying to get at the fact people are shouting "champion should get 60%" but they are saying it ASSUMING that Magee is the champion, when technically he isn't as the bbboc have called for the BRITISH purse bids, NOT the ebu. Maybe my dig at them seemed arrogant but I'm certainly not sitting on a high horse here demanding things, I'm delighted the fight has been called for because it is no secret it's the only fight I want.

I'm more than happy for 50/50 purse bids if the ebu is in play of course, and there is certainly no arrogance or disrespect to Magee from me, I think you know me by now :TU:

Let me first say that I haven't spoken to either camp since this was announced but in my opinion the stumbling block is purely money - not location or promotion issues. Magee will fight anywhere and anytime - he hasn't fought in Belfast for years but that shouldn't be used against him.

I think it is just posturing at the moment as Team Smigginator try and hold the % as close to 50 as possible and also gain home advantage.

Would the Smigtastic be happy if the EBU title wasn't on the line? Maybe but doubtful, one thing is for sure Smiggarooney would be a lot less happy than Magee would be if the British belt wasn't on the line.

Lets get it on in Smiggatrons back yard and have the EBU title on the line but it should be at least 60/40 at minimum for Magee.

As outlined above - lets see if Smiggalicious and the Bomber are so generous when the brog slips onto the foot!?

P.S. I have always been a Smith fan and think he is a great guy, even if he is a carrier of pigeon lice, but on this one I will be toeing the party line and adhering to the whips wishes.

Smigga,

Thank you for your reply.

Your last line in my view gives things away I am afraid - if the European Title is on the line then it is a FACT that if the fight goes to purse bids the champion will be entitled to 60% - in this case the more lucrative title is the european.

In addition it is you who I believe is taken this the wrong way - you want home advantage as well as a 50/50 split on the purse - what does Brian Magee get out of this for giving you the chance to topple the European Champion regardless of whether his title is on the line or not?? he is in a no win situation other than impressing the WBO governing body due to your high rating with them.

There are 2 problems with regards this fight and this is where the compromise should be - if you get home advantage then why not give Magee 60% - if you are that confident of victory there will be pay days ahead :TU: If Magee gets home advantage then a 50/50 split for fighting the European champion would be a suitable compromise.

Paul - unless you do compromise - the fight is NOT happening as I know Team Magee are looking for other alternatives due to what seems a disagreement with regards the purse - who is at fault for that for me it is plain to see.

Paul - you are a good fighter and you have a chance to impress against a viable opponent that no one can grumble about if you win - it is my opinion a tadge bit of stubborness or ego or perhaps boxing politics is getting in the way of a very good fight.

It won't be on purse bids for the EBU title though. The purse bids will be for the British title.

Sadly, I cannot see the EBU title opening to many opportunities for Magee. He's just not charasmatic enough, and also too dangerous.

I cannot see Steiglitz or Bute defending against him, not even in their home patch. He's not marketable enough and he's too risky (especially for Steiglitz).

You only have to look at Magee's activity level to see how many opportunities he gets.

As I state again winning the EBU title no longer guarantees a top 10 ranking with the WBC(or even top 15).
For example Jamie McDonnell is #17 at Bantamweight, Matthew Hatton is #24 at Welterweight and I'd guess Audley Harrison won't be making the top 15 of their next rankings considering he's currently not ranked at all and only beat Sprott.

It is however far more prestigious than the British title, the most prestigious title there is in boxing after the 'World' titles.

Sorry not what I meant - although I give Magee a great shot against Steiglitz - I think Bute will be too fresh.

What I meant is that I don't think the EBU belt is enough leverage to get Magee and OPPORTUNITY to fight for the world title (which is very sad). Remember the long reign of the skilled, but not a big name and eye catching Rudy Markussen, it didn't really present him with a world title opportunity - and I think, unfortunately, it will be the same for Magee. You only have to look at his activity and his voluntary shots (or lack of) of any title to see that fighters don't want anything of him.

I think, given the coverage Smith had on the contender, that he would probably get the shot before Magee if it came to a voluntary defence. Smith, whether it is deserved or not, is a "bigger name" and more marketable than Magee. I'm sure Steiglitz and Bute viewed his last few fights and compare it with Magee impressive display against Larsen will come to the conclusion that he would be less risk for a higher reward.

I think Magee needs this fight also. Magee needs to fight.

Lets get it on.

Stu,

Whilst on the surface your post as always seems sense and is well written - the only reason why Smith MAY get his shot at the WBO title is due to his promoter and his connections - people often slate Mr W arren but his reputation as a very good promoter and he is held in very high regard by the WBO - that doesnt in my opinion have too much to do with Paul Smith - and in addition I disagree with your viewpoint Magee necessarily needs this fight with Smith - whilst I respect Smith is a very good fighter indeed he has yet to fight world class opposition where as Magee has operated in both World and European class and thus it is my viewpoint - Smith needs Magee a lot more than the other way round.

Whilst its clear Magee v Smith would be a very good fight for the both of them due to their standings in the respective governing bodies - Magee is in a stronger position due to his status as European Champion - and whether you or anyone else wants to believe it or not - Magee definitely has other offers on the plate - I am serious that is a FACT - and I have got that from someone within his camp.

Stu - I agree with you and anyone else who states Magee v Smith is a very good fight for the winner - it puts them in a very strong position in both the European and World Governing body rankings.

Back to Magee - I am told he will not be held to ransom - time is running short and the other offers on the table will be pursued VERY SHORTLY - if Smith's promoter and Magee's manager do not come to a satisfactory conclusion in the very near future - and regardless of the purse bids situation for Smith's British belt - the fight may not happen if a satisfactory consclusion is not brought around between Team Smith and Team Magee - it is a FACT the purse bids request from the BBBofC has been made by the BBBofC to speed things up and try to get get both parties to decide whether the fight is going to happen or not - otherwise the BBBofC will ask for a purse bids situation for another opponent to face Smith!!!! - please Team Smith - correct me if I am wrong!!!

I am also willing to bet - even if purse bids are agreed the fight will not be happening this side of the summer - the first couple of weeks in September is most likely - lets see if I am right!!! :TU:

I hope you are correct that Magee has had offers, but I do doubt they are with Steiglitz or Bute.

I would love to hear some of the names of the offers. I aint disputing you've been told it, but its not the first time in boxing history that a camp has said we are pursuing offers as a bait to get the deal signed. Look at how Haye "swindled" Enzo Maccarinelli.

Well lets hope they are geniune offers and if they move Magee's career forward then hope he goes for them.

What you say about Magee having fought in world class and not Smith is very true - and yes, Magee would be a fantastic stepping stone for Smith - and one I haven't decided if I think he can win or not. However, that is also part of the reason why Smith will be able to get bigger fights quicker than Magee. Magee has generally lost when he has stepped up - he'll be harder to market for the champions than Smith.

I didn't suggest that a straight shot a Steiglitz for Smith NOW would be a deserved shot - but I can see him getting it before Magee.... thats all I meant. Should he want to fight a Magee esque opponent to give him more experience at the higher level and give him a better chance at Steiglitz - yes he should. Does HE need Magee to get his shot.... no he doesn't. He's a bit like Duddy in that respect.

The European title is not necessarily on the line. When Skelton fought Rogan, he was European champion, but refused to put the European title up and ended up getting stripped when he lost.

Brian Magee has perhaps 2 years left in the sport.

With regards to Smith getting his chance first - you are probably right but with respect to Paul Smith - that will have nothing to do with him being world class or haven proved it - it will however have everything to do with his promoter being extremely good at what he does.

You and others are missing the main point - eventually everything will come down to the promoters/managers FINALLY agreeing to do a deal - the purse bids situation is merely being used as a tool by the BBBofC - they know sometimes promoters stall and sometimes they maybe a little backward in coming forward with regards to finally settling on a deal - the purse bids situation forces the hand of BOTH parties to either put up or shut up.

It is my bet if Smith and Magee do fight it will be for both titles :TU: - I wrote "if" they fight.

If they do fight I think Smith wins.

I think this is a fight where one is slightly on the slide in Magee and the other who has not shown us 100% of what he can do in Smith.

I suspect Smith will be able to raise his game and maybe stop Magee late on.

Good fight though and Magee should never be written off

you seriously suggesting a former middleweight would stop someone who has only been stopped once by world champ elect carl froch? This fight wont last 9 rounds mate. Smigga has balls taking this - he can look on it as a learning curve, his time will come.

I still believe it should be a 50/50 split after reading through all this, Magee has got something that paul wants and no matter what people say Paul has something that Magee wants, If people are asking if I would do the same then YES I would. If someone in my weight wins the vacant British title tommorrow and then says he'll fight me for a 50/50 split I'll take it although my title is't as valuable or have as much pull as either Paul's or Brians you still get point.

Mayweather is different to the person who raised him, you talking about the biggest prize in the game there, You fight Mayweather you demand $$$$ But he commands more cos he's generating them. Magee is bringing one title and Paul is bringing another. If anything Paul is the bigger sell here and possibly has the biggr profile due tothe likes of Contender?? Either way I feel 50/50 is fair on both parties..
