Calzaghe v Green

Post by oliverfennell »

Purely speculation at present, but it's being talked about on the British board.

would be a very interesting and fight and if it was on aussie shores, it may even eclipse green v jones jr. i think joe would take decision or make green retire late.

Joe Calzaghe will not be making a comeback after 18 months out of the ring.

The boxing world has been buzzing with speculation that the former undefeated two-weight champ may be considering a return.

The 38-year-old Welshman, who admitted last month he has used cocaine, was said to be eyeing up Robin Reid as a potential opponent and had even spoken to US TV about the broadcast rights to the fight.

However a spokesman for Calzaghe has rubbished the speculation and insists the ex-undisputed super-middleweight king has no plans to fight again.

This is just my opinion of course, but what happens when someone hits like a brick train(green) and lands cleanly early on and rattles his legs again, like old man Hopkins and RJJ did.

Your kidding yourself if you think Calzaghe stumbles to his feet this time, and even if he does, Greens a natural finisher he won't make it to the end of the round like old man hopkins or RJJ allowed Calzaghe to do.

Stoppage/retired what are you on, this is joe Calzaghe we're talking about here.

Calzaghe never entered the ring with a puncher like Green(I said the same thing about RJJ never being in the ring with punching power like Green ;;-) ), for now I'll sit on the fence, but i'm quietly confident.

It would be a great fight if it happened,If there is a stoppage it would be Green winning, no way does Calzaghe KO him.
If it goes the distance id predict Calzaghe by UD.
As much as people discredit Calzaghe the guy was a great boxer and also tough. He may have missed fighting the best in there primes but the guy could really box.

Another point about Green-Mundine as Adam Stated. Green at 168 is a diffrent fighter to now at his ideal fighting weight. If he landed clearly on Calzaghe I think Joe would be in huge trouble, If he cant hurt him early though Calzaghe would win IMO.

reckon Calzaghe on points. Definite potential for a cold finish for Joe but think it would be a boxing lesson for Green in the end. if i was Calzaghe supporter i would be VERY nervous th first few rounds.

AS for not wobbling Mundine- to mymemory i would suggest 1)He went the body too much 2)he missed alot and didnt catch him really clean due to being outboxed. 3)the fight steadily went downhill for green due to the effects of 2) , 4). he looked like shite ie unhealthy.

Adam, those fighters hit no where near as hard as Green.

Bika imo is the hardest puncher he stepped inside the ring, only Sakio didn't know how to box.

Look no excuses, i believe like most there was a valid reason, Mundine beat him, i did say on the night that was Mundines finest hour, his signature win.

I would like to see it again still, but i wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't.

No, just no. Roy Jones Jr is an all time great and a universally recgonised boxer who generated massive interest. The general public here wouldn't give two squirts about some washed up WBO coke head from Wales.

I disagree to an Extent, With the amount of Brits in Australia I would suggest that Calzaghe Vs Green would be just as Big as RJJ VS Green. Especially considering the marketing that could be done with the fight.

Calzaghe the Undefeated World Conquering 2 division Champion, Vs the Green Machine. Id say it would sell extremely well.

I just asked me Mother if she knew who Joe Calzaghe is, she said "isnt he a soccer player?"

Why would Calzaghe risk his record against a man 2 inches taller than him in a heavier weight division? He has nothing to prove.

In Calzaghe's last fight Jones knocked him down in the first round. If Green knocks somebody down in the first he goes after him like a mongrel dog after a steak.

agreed. we also have the ashes coming up later in the year. so that would give pleny of time for joe to get ready. and there would also be a truck load of extra pom's out here for the cricket. so the 2 could go hand in hand, or the fight as a lead up to the cricket.

I think the fight would actually be of significance for both fighters.

For me Calzaghe still didn't do enough to be held as high as he is, and a couple more fights win, lose or draw couldn't hurt him growing a little more World wide, Calzaghe's career was kind of like a good movie with a bad ending that made no sense for me.

The same thing with Green, has the potential to be remembered for a long time, but without the fights Green will only ever be speculated by those who followed his career, Greens career could have been a lot better had he not been ripped off in Germany, but it wasn't and for years his career made no sense.

If fighters don't get in the ring with him, he can't prove how great he is.

I think the crowd, and PPV could eclipse RJJ, it's Briton vs Australia....need i say more.

The problem is, it might seem like greeny beating up on a has been again (i don't completely agree with this, but it might seem that way). However, with the right marketing, and timing (like bigred said, tie it in with the ashes) it could be huge.

I know I'd go.

Danny should be fighting active cruiserweights. Dragging people out of retirement is a bit like grave robbing.

Definitely Eubank was a serious, serious puncher. Don't be fooled by the amount of decisions on his record - that was hesitancy to finish the job post-Watson, combined with a sparing, stamina-conserving style. But that overhand right of his was a very damaging punch.

Lacy, not sure. He definitely was a puncher to a degree, but since he's had shoulder trouble in his power arm, he's not been able to stop anybody. He was healthy for the Calzaghe fight, but how potent his punch was at that time will forever be a moot point.

Funny, though, how the one boxer who Calzaghe fought who you happen to concede WAS a big puncher, happens to be an Aussie...
