Earnings of British & Irish world champions
Earnings of British & Irish world champions
Does becoming an alphabet world title holder mean that you should be set up to live out the remainder of your life comfortably provided you are sensible? Or do some fighters still earn relatively little?
Of the British and Irish world champions of recent (past 5) years, I think Hatton, Calzaghe, Haye and Khan (all Warren products, bar Haye) have by far earned the most of those in the UK, while Bernard Dunne would have done quite well for himself in Ireland. What about the remainder, would these guys have earned enough in their career already to be able to live comfortably without working again?
My speculative earnings table is below. Be interested to know what others think and whether there is anybody else to add to the list?
And are there any other promoters in the UK apart from Warren that can make a fighter into a true box office star?
1 Ricky Hatton
2 Joe Calzaghe
3 David Haye
4 Amir Khan
5 Bernard Dunne
6 Carl Froch
7 Scott Harrison
8 Junior Witter
9 Clinton Woods
10 Enzo Macarinelli
11 Alex Arthur
12 Nicky Cook
13 Gavin Rees

Frank Maloney did pretty good with ig Lennox I s'pose. At a guess, I'd say he bagged more money wise than the others... but I'm only guessing.

Well I think David Haye is answering that one for you, loud and clear.
Lennox didn't do bad either.
On the earnings side it is very difficult to say.
Sometimes it's not the holding of the belt that's the defining issue.
Often there can be a massive difference in the purse for each weight division for instance.
The average retirement age is 34 so I would say it's a tiny minority who earn enough to be comfortable for the rest of their lives.

Re: Earnings of British & Irish world champions
Well on average, as interest rates stand , on £1,000,000 you would earn £40,000 a year interest.
But obviously you'd have to take tax off that, what is better is to leave it in the account to get compound interest, because if you spend the entire interest of £40,000 all you will ever have in the account is a million, and over time that gets relativly less and less.
compound interest on a million over twenty years works out to.
One Day – £109.59
One Month – £3,333.33
One Year – £40,741.54
Five Years – £220,996.59
Ten Years – £490,832.68
Twenty Years – £1,222,582.09

Not necessarily Ian. If I had a million I wouldn't keep it in a bank here and get fucked on Tax.

Re: Earnings of British & Irish world champions
But the point is, Ian, is that enough to live on ?
If you retire at 34 with £1 mill in the bank then even with interest I would say no.
If you kipper it at 74 then £1.2 mill divided by 40 is £30k per annum.
What will £30k be worth in 2052 ???? !!!!!
Shit this is depressing.
fornicate it it's enough.![[icon_knockout.gif] :KO:](./images/smilies/icon_knockout.gif)

I would put my life on it Woods made a LOT more than Witter. He boxed Jones and Tarver in the states.Junior boxed Alexander, which Woods could cancel out with Cloud.Junior never "cashed in" at all,he defended at the Ally Pally and Doncaster Dome!Clinton,a careful man, will be very comfortable, whilst Junior will definately have to work again.Counter-puncher wrote:can anyone confirm if Woods made more than Witter?

Re: Earnings of British & Irish world champions
With regards Witter, a very decent fighter...
Unfortunately a promoter cannot book a huge venue and charge handsomely if nobody is turning up. I went to the Doncaster Dome for his terrific fight with Vivian Harris and there wasn't that many about. Don't his team take a sizeable chunk ?
He's not done yet anyway and I think when his knee is better he'll prob move to Welter.

In addition he made quite a bit of money through his fights with Johnson - he got a tidy sum certainly from the 3rd fight which Mr W arren promoted.

You should place Carl Froch higher than Dunne and Khan with regard earnings.

Re: Earnings of British & Irish world champions
Does this list include earnings made outside of the ring as well?
Hatton, Haye and Khan have all made lot's of money outside the ring with Sponsorship deals and personal apperances and tv work. Calzaghe made most of his money in the ring as Joe didnt seem too interested in making money away from the ring, the autobiography apart.
Years ago i remember that it was once said that Tony Sibson's ring earnings were in eccess of 1 million pounds, and that was made in the 80's.

I think it is safe to say that boxers today are better informed and represented by accountants and personal management, that most of them threse day's can hang on to and invest their money so they need never work again.
I still think though, that it is only the top maybe 5-10% are actually earning enough to retire in their 30's and never need to worry again about money.
British title level fighters's would hope to earn enough to buy a house and bank enough money to give them enough time to develope a life/career away from the ring. I may be wrong, as i have no facts to speek of and im sure the boxer's who come on here will keep their earning between themselves and the Tax Man.
Buncey once said " a proffesional boxer's career is not defined by the amount of title's he's won, but by how much money he has managed to make."
