No alphabet titles - the future of top fights?

Post by jeej »

Just an interesting quote from the lead up to PBF VS Mosley;
Mosley's WBA welterweight title won't be at stake in the fight because Mayweather doesn't care enough about it to pay the sanctioning fee. "Why should we give someone 3 percent of our money?" Mayweather manager Leonard Ellerbe said.

You think this sort of thing will happen more and more? Obviously it's a more appropriate measure for someone who has already won everything there is to win. Cant see an up and coming boxer being able (or wanting) to avoid fighting for a belt. But at the very top, the belts have never been so irrelevant.

Food for thought. :bag:

It seems that the TOP level fights don't really need to be for belts, and that is all down to the fact that the status of a 'world champion' has been so diluted. The belts have lost their credibility. In the truly major fights, if there is a belt on the line it seems to be a side issue. If Pacman and Mayweather fight who cares what belt is on the line. It's a shame about the lack of respect for the belts but all these crappy organisations are to blame.
