With Better Managment could of Nathan King been a British

Post by Cotto16 »

Champion? i heard alot of people say his fight with kenny anderson could of gone either way, i scored his fight with jeffries a draw last night, and before geting stopped on a cut him and tony quigley was even on the score cards. With a good team behind him could king of been a british champion?

Had his 1st fight against Tony Oakey who was 9-0 :o Then Beat Peter Haymer who just turned over 6-0 and ABA Champion.
His next 3 loses he was batter then, if he was built up I think he could of been British Champion :TU:

I have known Nathan from the age of 10, we sponsored him as an amateur up until he 16. Brian Coleman has been his trainer all the way through and took him to Newbridge gym regulary to train with team Calzaghe. I honestly feel he could have gone a hell of a lot further had some of the decitions gone his way (lets be honest a load were very close) If he had won these close ones who knows where he would have gone as a lot of boxing is mentality. If he had won those fights he would have had even more self belief, as it was once he had lost a couple the doubt crept in and he became a journeyman.

Just my thoughts.

Who knows, maybe he can still. Francis Jones got his shot - so can see maybe a similar kind of voluntary opportunity happening for King - unlikely I know, but I would hope the BBBoC wouldn't veto it.

Problem I see with King though, and I don't know him, just going by his body language - is the desire to be a champion isn't quite strong enough. He is what I would call a "good" journeyman. Competitive, tries hard - but you sometimes feel that he has fights for the taking but choses to look good losing.

The Stevie McGuire and the Kenny Anderson fights were too I definately thought just that 5% more effort from King would have got the decision. Against Jefferies, I'm not going to discredit either boxer - it looked a lovely little scrap... I do feel King ran out of rounds and if that was an 10 rounder, then who knows.

Its a little frustrating, that he always seems to be coming on at the end - but doesn't quite do enough and you don't see him really mad at decisions. Just like the desire isn't quite there to be a champion. He is a credit to the sport though - absolutely, more King esque fighters we need.

Another fighter who I have felt similar towards, was another Welsh man - Chris Davies. He got his surprise chance against Tony Oakey, and I felt he had the beatings of Oakey. He put up a sprited display, but I think it he could have won if he just would have given it that extra 5%.

He is a very decent journeyman who will really test any prospect, I havent seen his fights with Quigley or Anderson.

I've heard he was ruined in the Calzaghe gym and had liberties taken with him everytime he went there?? With the right management I do firmly believe he could have done something on the domestic scene..

Wouldn't suprise me... its not too late for this guy to be rescued. He needs to make his mind up if he wants to box for three zero's or two. If its two he could regroup and do something. Don't forget the likes of Chris Saunders, Del Bryan, Steve Foster rebounded from poor starts. There is undoubtably talent there- but he needs to rethink his career for anything to change.

Saying that you always have wars when you go to other peoples gyms, often there is more rivalary between the managers/trainers than the fighters!

Was there something with Jon Jo Irwin or was that an amateur fight. I can remember Naz being on some TV show (when he was very young) - I think it was Fantasy Football League and Frank Skinner commenting on Naz about unusual boxing names... and bring up Elvis Parsley. Naz said he never heard of him, and Frank said he recently lost to some fellow called Jon Jo Irwin. Naz said something like "well he must be rubbish, cause I've smashed Jon Jo".

I think hard sparring is part and parcel of the game. Without it you can't really hope to replicate what an actual fight is going to feel like. I think body sparring is good though.... wouldn't fancy doing that with someone like Ricky Hatton though ha ha

Jon jo was a top class amateur wasn't he? Is he something to do with Ian Irwin?

Do you remember Jon jo's fight with Paul Ingle?

Poor Mark Epton lol, bet he's kicking himself

I used to get really pissed off because the lads at my gym were out boxing me..... I was unbeaten pro, and they were like 15-16. As the years advanced I realised the problem Brian Rose, Jack Arnfield and Karl Kirkham..... lol

In answer to the thread question - No

I watched him fight on the Calzaghe-Byron Mitchell undercard against Varuzhan Davtyan. Davytan punched him from pillar to post for 4 rounds then the Welsh ref gave King the decision (all the home fighters on that bill won). Michael Monaghan steadily worked over Gary Lockett for 10 rounds and Lockett inexplicably got the decision
