5% is being generous,10% ridiculous.Very, very few will come out of the game with anything. The Hartlepool middle Craig Denton 9-0,has just retired because he was losing money boxing!Ask Moorsey if he will ever have to work again and he will laugh at you.And thats a guy consistently involved in title calshes for years.

The 5-10% i was referring to was the highest level fighters, World Champions. Surely a guy fighting for British and European Titles has earned enough money to at least buy himself a house and bank a few quid!

Hatton, Haye and Khan have all made lot's of money outside the ring with Sponsorship deals and personal apperances and tv work. Calzaghe made most of his money in the ring as Joe didnt seem too interested in making money away from the ring, the autobiography apart.

Years ago i remember that it was once said that Tony Sibson's ring earnings were in eccess of 1 million pounds, and that was made in the 80's.
Maybe on paper,Sibbo had some big fights. What he saw of that money is open to question.

I think it is safe to say that boxers today are better informed and represented by accountants and personal management, that most of them threse day's can hang on to and invest their money so they need never work again.

I still think though, that it is only the top maybe 5-10% are actually earning enough to retire in their 30's and never need to worry again about money.
i wish i did think it was safe to say that, but i am not so sure.

It may sound ridiculous, but looking further down that list does anybody think it's possible that Peter Buckley made more out of the sport than fighters like Gavin Rees in all? With all the fights he had I could well imagine someone like Buckley having his mortgage paid off.

Some journeymen are fighting every week, saving shows up and down the country, some of them must be on a good wedge in a year.

Froch should be above Dunne. I'm not sure the exact figure but I think Bernard earned around €200,000 for the Poonsawat fight and less against Cordoba as the Panamanian was the champ. I'm sure Froch has earned a lot more in the 4 World title fights he has had.

Well he had 300 fights and i think the average purse for those fighters is about £500 so thats £150 000, not a bad earner. I could be wrong but I think i saw an interview with him where he said he liked a bet though, so he might not have paid his mortgage off, especially if he had my luck

Let's hope not as the house always wins eventually!

I don't think many fans really have an idea about purses other than those connected to boxing people. It's all guess work but the figure you mention is probably at the minimum. I'm sure when stepping in at late notice to help a promotor he was able to command maybe a grand or so depending on the size of the show, so it does add up doesn't it.

Bernard Dunne is way too high on that list. And didn't Enzo Mac make seven figures against Haye?

The Poonsawat purse bid was really low due to an error by somebody.Im sure Dunne got about £30,000,leading to some to suggest,on here,he would be looked after "under the table"

Poonsawats camp was unable to make a purse bid because of some sort of mix up with a contact they had over here so Brian Peters bid was relatively small but Dunne did receive a nice sum at the end of it all.

That list is good, where did you get that from? John Ruiz got $11m for fighting Jones? And Julius Francis got $560k for fighting Tyson while Danny Williams got $250k?

Also, according to this Shane Mosley has picked up some good purses. I saw on 24/7 Mayweather was slagging him off for apparently having to borrow money from De La Hoya as he was near broke. I read an American writers column today where he commented that it was a low blow? Is there any truth in this? Mosley seems anything but flash so I can't see how he could have blown all of that.

Eastman is a good shout. The big purses will come not from the Witters defending a title in the UK where the tele money is small and the attendance even less but when they go and challenge a big name in the states where it will be big gate big tele money if PPV even more
