Trash talkers - likes and dislikes

The thread on Floyd Mayweather got me thinking re trash talk. When it's done right, I find it hilarious and love it. When it's done in the wrong way, I just want them to get smashed to bits.

Likes for me - the old James Toney.

Interviewer: "Vitali Klitschko?"
JT: "Garbage."
Interviewer: "Wladimir Klitschko/"
JT: "More garbage."

I know it doesn't look much written down but I was laughing like f*ck. Toney didn't miss a beat.

Anthony Small got on my wick for a while but I warmed to him a bit before he got whooped.

Trash talk should be funny or bad ass. Toney is usually pretty funny with elements of bad ass. Tyson was just a bad ass and unintentionally hilarious at times. Ali was great. Mayorgas funny and managed to drag Forrest into a war. Mayweather is an embarassment but probably manages to mess with a few opponents heads

Floydd talking shit about shane is just fake. It sounds stupid and makes me cringe.

Toney was just a badass. He really would fight anyone that guy.

Anthony Small tries too hard and doesn't have the intelligence to pull it off. Too often ends up getting his words mixed up whilst trying to say too much.

Toney was good though, to the point whilst being as nasty as you like.

Mayorga was usually funny, where as Hopkins went too far with some of his trash, especially with DiBella

I don't know if this is considered trash talking, but it's funny all the same. Samuel "Bird-brain" Peter just won the WBC title and started shouting what sounds like "Who necks" (meaning "Who's next") around the ring. The interviewer started asking him who he would fight next, to which he replied "I want to fight who necks". You can see Manny Stewart trying not to laugh when the camera goes back to ringside.

I'm not sure why but I tend to support fighters like that, both those it works well for (Naz, Eubank, Toney, Haye) but also those who don't quite pull it off (Small, Fury, Mayweather, Audley). I used to enjoy Mike Tysons press conference antics, likewise Michael Gomez. Even when I look back at Chisora's kiss on Baker, it was probably more entertaining than the actual fight. Even Audley, I have to say I think boxing is definately more interesting in terms of an added dimension with him involved. I'm enjoying the Groves-DeGale slanging which feels more genuine then most and should lead to an exciting fight....one day.

All in all I don't think trash talking does much harm and for me it adds an ingredient to the main showpiece.
