You're in Canada right? You seem to have a good following of British boxing.. :)crusader wrote:Gavin on points.
Who do you think the biggest prospects over here are, and how do you rate the Olympians?
Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
Ya I'm in Canada but I'm originally from Wales
All of the Olympians have impressed me at times, but Gavin has done so on a more regular basis than the others. He has exceptional timing, defense, footwork, speed, etc, just overall ring generalship. His body work is also impressive and although he is not a huge puncher, he is not feather fisted.
Saunders is a compact, strong, and can really dig to the body, but he has looked soft and underwhelming at times. Degale is very talented and can really look great, but he hasn't been looking great consistently. Despite this I think he could end up being the best of the bunch. He probably has the most raw talent out of the Olympians and I think he will do good things in the future.
Price is overrated in my opinion. He has shown power, but little else as a pro, and although most people seem to think he is better than Fury, nothing has suggested that to me so far. Jeffries is powerful, but a bit limited and will probably get out boxed at higher levels. One Olympian who I thought had great potential as a pro was Bradley Saunders, but he is still in the amateurs.
As far as other prospects, George Groves will do big things. He is explosive and has good speed and power, I also find him to be exciting to watch. I think he will be a world class fighter one day. Brook (if you can still call him a prospect) is obviously headed towards the world scene and in my opinion could a real force at the highest level. I also think boxrec's own Tony Bellew has what it takes to make it to European level at least. Really solid boxer-puncher he is.

Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
Frankie may hit with precision, but in the pros, I'm no where near certain that his defence will be what people expect it to be. He probably beats Barnes, but as I have said, I think he will struggle when he steps up.
I'd be personally surprised if he won a European belt, against a proper European fighter.

Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
id be surprised if he didnt win a couple of world titles
Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
I'm not saying he won't, I'm just saying that I don't think he will. He reminds me of a better version of Paul Truscott. Easy on the eye, precise, but easy as hell to hit. Amateur success doesn't guarantee professional triumph.

Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
Gavin is a class act. After another dozen fights I expect him to be close to the finished article.
There are only two questions for me.
1) Can he take world level power?
2) Does he have world level power?
He has the skills, the boxing brain and so far the dedication, but as with all hot prospects, it is whether they have the power when they eventually step up. It`s one thing beating a journeyman with skill, but another story altogether trying to impose the same set of skills on a man who takes your punches no problem and delivers back with venom, looking for his own win.
I guess we`ll find out in a couple of years.

Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
Even without major power I think Gavin has the boxing ability to have success at the world class level. His speed, defense, and reflexes are really something else and can take him a long way on their own. People today are to concerned about how hard a guy hits and not enough about his other attributes. I'm not sure there is another prospect in the world with the technical boxing skills Gavin possesses. Besides, I don't think Gavin is as light hitting as some people think
Re: Frankie Gavin vs David Barnes
When Frankie get's them 8oz green bereys on he's a match for anyone, When he hits people he get's there respect.. He'll start hurting people with 1 shot the more he matures!! He sits on his shots at times and when he does that he has terrific power. I've witnessed him do a few in the gym now and Steve Saville don't usually go down without a fight. This will be Frankie's year I also think he'll end up with a huge fan base by the end of the year!! The kid is huge in Birmingham he really is.. Can sell 1000 tickets off his own back!! Is there anyone else in the country bar Hatton who can do that??
