boxing programs IN high schools?
boxing programs IN high schools?
Are there any high schools, public or private, that have boxing teams? I'm not talking about after school clubs that are not school affiliated. I'm talking about actual boxing programs run by the school systems.
The reason I ask is that as a PE teacher I'm always looking for ways to get my students active, however, when I taught in the USA the school boards never saw the health benefits of teaching kids boxing techniques (for fitness). Even when I explained it was non-contact (because it was basically cardio box) they refused to let me teach it during our fitness units. However, they were all about teaching American Football (with al it's neck, spine, and brain injuries).

Look up programs and present that Colleges have boxing teams, even IVY league schools. Not to mention the Armed Forces.

Thanks. I knew the military universities had intramural boxing teams. I actually use the manual from West Point in the class I teach to our 11 and 12 grade students. I know Marquette has one too, but what about actual high schools with programs?wsbuf wrote:Look up programs and present that Colleges have boxing teams, even IVY league schools. With the global obesity epidemic you would think school systems would be all for teaching it, at a minimum, for physical conditioning puposes, but high school fight nights would also make a lot of money for the school systems and equipment cost is a fraction of equipment for hockey, American football, or baseball. Yes, injury is possible, but it's more likely to occur in high school football or hockey.
Of course..................finding qualified coaches would be a HUGE problem.

hello, I am mates with a former goodclass kickboxer
he found that if you take the word 'boxing' out altogether, it helps.
I think he calls his classes somethin like 'movement science' or something like it, and he gets paid (on a consultancy basis rather than as an employee) by various Local Education Authorities to put on classes for kids.
basically they are kickboxing classes in all but name/lack of contact sparring, and any students who seem to have aptitude or enthusiasm, he takes on in his private kickboxing classes.

Yup. I played football in high school when living in Ontario and later in CEGEP (college) when I moved to Quebec. Now some years have past and I have pain in my knees when it rains. Beyond the neck, spine, and brain injuries who are potentially fatal or debilitating, I would see the damage it does to knees is by far the worse in terms of every pain and reduced capacity to sprint. I really regret doing it, I would any day prefer my kids do cardio box than american football.zslayton wrote:Are there any high schools, public or private, that have boxing teams? Just call it "BOX WON DO" and I'm sure you'll get the whole neighborhood trying out for it. You can check out http://FrontPageBoxing.com/amateurs/ and you'll see links to all the universities and military's boxing sites.... and all of your amateur boxing LBCs and Golden Gloves franchise.

Moller high school in Cincinnatt. It is a catholic school. There may be another one in that area but I am not sure.
There is a referee/judge in New York that gave me his card. It says he is director of NYC public schools boxing at the Archimedes Academy. It may be in the Bronx. PM me and I'll give you his contact info.

there is a program at Dwyer High School in south Florida that is in our LBC (Florida Gold Coast). There was an article in the USA boxing Magazine (feb 2010) about it by Mike Davis who started it his phone number is listed on the FGC website.

Hello,
As far as I know Leo High School (Chicago) has an after-school boxing program. Does anyone know whether they accept college students too? Any experience with it? I've sent an official email with the request to join, but I haven't received any reply yet.
