Ludicrous sh1te from the WBA. Meehan? Our Eric mentioned this a little while back and here Ben does a bit more.
Sorry if it's been posted but I couldn't see it anywhere.

Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
Why does the WBA insist on pushing back ex-champs who lost in dire, uncompetitive fights?
No amount of losses kept John Ruiz away from their no1 spot, even when RJJ outboxed him widely, and now are we going to have to suffer Ruslan Chagaev in permanent residency?
The WBA must be the worst boxing organisation going. Look at the rankings. They've got 2 and even 3 separate world champs in nearly every division.

Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
at least with it being an elim, haye has time to potentially fit in a really big fight before the inevitable WBA mandatory.
the only problem is, wladimir klitschko's title situation is not clear. would a fight with povetkin (IBF ando) come before a fight with haye?
i feel that haye is misunderstood. just about everyone with an alias and a message board account seems to think that haye is frightened of wladimir klitschko. the way i see it, haye will want the big money, the big stage - he will want a fight that actually offers him something.

Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
Pretty obvious whats going on here tbh by the WBA. By putting him as no1 it stalls up the mandatory proccess he needs to get in shape to get in the ring etc. This gives Haye plenty of time to fight a voluntary if he wanted to and probably unify with a Klit. This maximises the money for the WBA and allows to keep his belt/options fairly easily. Then if he does win all he ahs to do is knockout a poor mandatory before he has a voluntary of better standing.
Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
In fairness to Chagaev, he has never lost in a WBA sanctioned bout and his only defeat was to the No.1 Heavyweight in the world so he deserves to be fighting in at least a WBA eliminator. He won and defended the belt twice before having to vacate. Meehan on the other hand, really shouldn't be there.overhand_right wrote:Why does the WBA insist on pushing back ex-champs who lost in dire, uncompetitive fights?

'Tis the old, gnarled, cankered yet heavily bejewelled hand of Donald King at work.
Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
No doubt the ticket for Haye Ruiz read: Adam Booth for Hayemaker promotions in association with Goldenboy and Sauerland Events present..... With Don King also rumored to have some sort of options on Haye. With all these people gunning for him i doubt they wil let the WBA get in the way of them all making money.
Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
Hayes title reign seems to be following the modern trend of mediocrity :(

He wouldn't have to tho. If he wins another belt he becomes Super champion and I'm pretty sure that means he does not have to do mandatories.wrimc wrote:Pretty obvious whats going on here tbh by the WBA. Wha? Who cares if it wasn't a WBA-sanctioned bout? When you get that badly hammered & stopped in ANY fight, you should not remain at the top of the rankings.Deno1986 wrote:In fairness to Chagaev, he has never lost in a WBA sanctioned bout and his only defeat was to the No.1 Heavyweight in the world so he deserves to be fighting in at least a WBA eliminator. Well, unfortunately thats boxing. Anyway, Chagaev isn't at the top of the WBA rankings, he is No.2 behind Meehan so he has dropped since the Klitschko defeat. I'd rather have Chagaev there than some bum who has been fighting nobodies to get there.overhand_right wrote:Wha? Who cares if it wasn't a WBA-sanctioned bout? Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
I'd rather have Tomasz Adamek or Odlanier Solis right up there, why are they digging up Kali Meehan and restoring Chagaev?
Oh that's right, because they're both Don King fighters and the WBA are corrupt/inept.

Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
Thomas Adamek in London would be great!
Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
looks like solis has a chance to prove himself. WBC elim, vs valuev. that wil be interesting and the winner should fight vitali, though you never know these days. i'm hoping vitali fights the winner, cashes out, and goes away.
i like adamek. with him being an HBO fighter now, he won't fight again until october. HBO apparently want him to fight a contender, either peter, chambers or tony thompson, in newark NJ where he'll be a bigger draw than ever. he won't fight for a world title until next year, but he'll be making more money than any cruiser/ex cruiser not named david haye.
this wlad business is the key to everything. will he fight haye, or will he fight his mandatory, povetkin? i feel both have a chance of beating him. haye has that speed/power to smash a high up european chin. to steal that opening. he's had good practice vs tall guys like gurov, macca and valuev (whom he hurt at the end). and povetkin, crucially, can fight going forwards. with some speed and variety and subtlety. he has a good tank; perhaps the only guy that can take the fight to wlad with sustained attacks.
heavyweight will get really interesting soon, and the smaller fighters haye, povetkin, adamek, solis and boytsov will be in some exceptional fights. klitschkos don't really offer anything of substance to world boxing. and the WBA really do try to recycle some stale names.

Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
looks like HBO are paying adamek to fight a contender in newark NJ in october. no title fight this year - if adamek takes the HBO money and cedes control of his career to boxing's biggest paymasters.Rixxy wrote:Thomas Adamek in London would be great!
i'd love to see adamek-haye, but i'd hate to see it in england. adamek could get wobbled and the ref might just jump in, overlooking the fact that he's never been stopped and recovers from just about anything, from having his face nearly peeled off in 175-pound wars, to being rocked by cruiserweight hard nuts, or withstanding the rushes of one of the most heavy handed heavyweights in the world. i would hate to see a premature stoppage, the type of which we see in the UK a bit too often.
at the right time it would be an awesome fight between similarly sized men who have brought speed, movement and skills up to the pedestrian heavyweights. but i don't think the fans would truly respect the fight while the klitschkos are still atop the division. they could make some good money though, as haye said he'd consider adamek if he could bring in the interest of UK or US television. he obviously achieved that last weekend.

What do you mean by that?Autobarn wrote:klitschkos don't really offer anything of substance to world boxing.
Re: Meehan v Chagaev for a shot at David Haye
they have the titles, they do a bit of fencing, they beat fat bastards and it's boring.Horse wrote:What do you mean by that?Autobarn wrote:klitschkos don't really offer anything of substance to world boxing.
i probably phrased it wrong. they don't make boxing an event. there is no excitement, no spark, no style, and no good fights.
vitali had the ring title, everyone bent over backwards to make him "the man". and he did nothing with it, when it mattered. to his credit, he tried to get lewis rematch, the one fight that mattered. to his detriment, he didn't move on and build up his own serious body of work.
wlad is finally coming on. the chambers win was nice. but i have a feeling he'll beat feather fisted guys - no matter how skilled - forever. like chris byrd. wlad is looking the part but i won't be a believer until he either beats a puncher with ambition (haye) or deals with an accomplished pressure fighter (povetkin) in his face, who keeps coming after him.
they just have that size advantage and drain the life from the division. when they leave, things will liven up. hopefully they leave, or someone can remove them. they are turning worldwide fans off the heavyweight division. vitali v kevin johnson, wlad v ibragimov, were truly pathetic fights.
