Haye-Wlad in negotiations

Post by Autobarn »

i have read so much internet abuse regarding david haye and his "ducking" of wladimir klitschko. just after the ruiz fight, adam booth said haye was resting and not thinking about the next opponent. and i've seen page after page of posters saying that haye simply wants to milk the WBA title for big money. i've seen it in columns on ring mag's website, i've seen it here and i've seen it there. ppl have reacted hysterically to a piece of non-news like haye being on holiday, cue pages and pages of whiny shitbags saying the same old stuff.

the thing is, the IBF have just confirmed that haye and wlad are in fact in negotiations. the IBF are saying a unification is more important than a mandatory (surprisingly) and appear ready to push povetkin's challenge back. now of course there is a lot to negotiate and i'm sure it won't be an easy fight to make. but some major hurdles may be overcome, given that the IBF will "allow" wlad to fight haye, and that the 2 sides are in negotiations.

i always had a problem with the view that haye doesn't want the fight. he has a lot to gain from fighting wlad. he can potentially score a KO - indeed, haye has cracked some very high up european chins - though it won't be easy. the money from british PPV, HBO in america and german TV should be big. the recognition - for 3 world titles as well as acknowledgement from ring magazine - will be big. haye strikes me as a showoff who would love the biggest stage. it could be an enormous fight and i've never felt that haye would want to simply carry his career on fighting boring WBA recycled challengers.

Facts are - Haye had fights lined up against both K-Brothers. And Haye pulled out of both

Yes. He had an easier route to gaining a world title belt in Valuev. But it does seem that the K-Brothers are keener to fight Haye than he is of facing them.

I, like alot of people, expect Haye to wait in the wings for serious signs of deteriation in the K-Brothers before he tries his luck with any of them. Expect Haye to have a very mediocre reign as belt holder ...

The first time Haye pulled out of the Vitali fight was simply because the majority of the money he was going to earn was coming from Setanta. Can't blame the guy for faking a back injury. It wasn't because he wasn't up for it. Just the fact that he wouldn't have been paid.

I’d like Haye to beat both brothers, but I don’t think he can. Punchers chance against Wlad, no chance against Vitali.

I don't know why anyone would not understand why Haye pulled out of the fight. If you're going to fight the numero uno heavyweight, then you, at the very least, expect to be paid very well. It's nonsense to think different.

exactly.

now he's in a better position. he'll want to outdo those 800,000 PPV buys for the valuev fight. haye has never been a fighter to get stuck at one level. he's had 2 extra fights experience (valuev, ruiz) which will have helped him grow as a fighter, and to remain active.

david haye is never going to sit on a WBA title. he'll use the WBA title to get a big fight. the big fight is wlad.

But he already had the big fight set up before the WBA title :witzend:

Hasn`t he said many times he`s after the glory not the money

So that kinda contradicts the reasons he pulled out of both Klitschko fights. In time we will see who is correct about which path he decides to take with the WBA title. I just get the feeling, judged on how he now fights at heavyweight - he will take the safety 1st route ..

Exactly. Haye's played it completely the right way. Why take a dangerous fight like that for peanuts? He's now in a position where Wlad is calling him out. People seem to forget that before his permanent move to Heavyweight he had to go chasing Wlad around a shopping mall and called him out face to face. This fight has gone from a relatively unknown (to the casuals) crusierweight champion versus Wladimir to a massive unification fight with worldwide appeal. Haye is pretty much a household name now - most casual spots fans know of him now.

You might say legacy is more important than money but why not play your cards right and go for both hey?

I do agree that he had to pull out but i lost £400 in the process. He could have paid back some of the fans with the millions he now has. Unrealistic i know but it is annoying and last time i am going to plan to go abroad for a fight.

^^ yep - nail + head.

Thus why I despair when I read such lines, it shows people just shoot from the hip without actually thinking things through.

If I was Haye I'd have done precisely the same thing, why fight Vitali for free? Sentanta were going into administration, and I believe that ALL his purse was coming from there. If he had lost to Vitali, it would have damaged his stock badly, and his purses would have been much lower afterward.

Add in the fact that he could have been permanently injured or even killed during the fight, and why on earth would he go in there and fight for nothing.

some people on here need to really take a look at themselves in the mirror and ask what they would do in a fighter's position. Some real cobblers being spouted here.

Whatever Haye's flaws as a fighter, a lack of courage is not one of them.

You honestly think Haye will just sit on the WBA and fight the likes of Meehan and never fight a Klitschko?

That is the exact opposite to the way Haye has approached boxing thus far in his career i.e. go after the champions as quickly as possible.

Autobahn - I completely share your fustrations at the hundreds of morons on these forums who have taken Haye's holiday as him "bottling" the Wlad fight. After the Ruiz fight he openly said he is not thinking of Wlad, he is taking holiday. He has obviously done that is now back to start negotiations. What's so hard to understand about that?

Totally agree with this post.

Haye now has a better bargaining position. I think he needs to make the fight happen now though. Too many big fights have been derialed by boxers looking to the next opponent.

I've got faith in Haye though. He wants to fight the best.

It was a Wlad fight that Haye pulled out off because of Setanta/bad back. He started negotiating with Vitali after Setanta had went bust but he went for Valuev instead because of the conditions that K2 stipulated in the contract.

Haye has done the correct thing - the Wlad fight could have been the last of his career, why risk it for zero money? He also couldn't say it was to do with money as that would have been a breach of contract, hence the bad back.

He went for Valuev rather than Vitali, which means he has now made a lot of money and is a world champion who has already looked impressive via a mandatory. Any future fights v the Klits will be worth mega money and more importantly be a unification, which puts Haye in a far far better bargaining position than before.

This is a summary of how booking the Haye Vlad trip went for me, as explained in an e-mail chain to some pals. Painful for me, comical for them. Read from the bottom. My tongue was very much in my cheek for the 'kicking off on David haye' bit :

Last one now I hope

After the David Haye debacle I cheered myself up buying three tickets to see Amir Khan challenge for the world title at the O2, scheduled for this weekend. Will and Vanessa were going to come up and make a night of it. A couple of weeks ago, the champ Kotelnik postponed the fight due to ‘toothache’. So, it gets rescheduled for 18 July. Only on that date, Michael Jackson is playing the O2, which means the fight gets moved up to the MEN in Manchester and I can’t attend the bout.

Only now MJ is dead, the fight stays in Manchester and you guessed it, I have tickets to see the dead king of pop at the O2 too

This gets better and better for me

I now have two separate sets of BA flight tickets on the same day to different locations in Germany (if that doesn’t set off the terrorist alert I don’t know what will) and the fooking fight has been called off!

Last time I travelled from Liverpool , David Haye was on the same train. I’d have kicked off on him if I’d known he was going to put me through all this

Two return British Airways flights from London to Berlin paid for – check

Two nights paid for in swanky Berlin hotel to keep the missus sweet – check

Hearing final confirmation that David Haye’s challenge to world Champion Wladimir Klitschko is (against all expectations) in fact to be staged in Gelsenkirchen , on the other side of the country to Berlin – fooking priceless

i think a lot of pp just don't "get" haye.

for me the issue is not if he will fight wlad.

the issue is, will be do his utmost to box assertively and land power shots on wlad's brittle chin?

I wil say this....IF he fights Wlad he better make sure he steps into the ring at least 7lbs lightter than he did against Ruiz.
Wlad does not fight inside and Haye need not wrestle with him s he better be faster and being lighter will make sure he is/ He looked 'soft' in the ring against RUIZ.

I don't think for one minute that Haye is at all worried by the Klitschko's. Throughout his career he's always shown confidence and has always been willing to take risks.

Yes he agreed to fight both Klitschko's and pulled out, but by all acounts the contracts for those fights were slave deals. Haye agreed to them, because he didn't have much to bargain with at the time. His paycheck from those fights would have also come from Setanta which was going out of business at the time. Then the Valuev fight pop's up and the deal was more favourable, so Haye took it.

I'm pretty confident Haye's next fight will be against one of the brothers and if he wins he'll fight the other one to. :box:

The day will dawn for Britain's WBA heavyweight king David Haye as he seeks a showdown with two Ukrainian boxing giants by the name of Klitschko for the mantle of undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Annoyingly, firstly, came a boxing minnow by the name of John Ruiz, an American of Puerto Rican descent who held the mandatory position but went down four times in nine bloody, one-sided rounds earlier this month in front of 20,000 adoring Haye fans in Manchester. If Tex Cobb took credit for retiring Howard Cosell, Haye takes credit for retiring Ruiz. The Quiet Man says he wants to get the kids off the streets and into the gym in Worcester, Massachusetts.
As for the muscled, powerful, swashbuckling Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world is now ready to perform a similar cleansing exercise in a moribund heavyweight division at the age of 29, a good age for a heavyweight, a fresh age. Haye breathes new life into the division after just three fights there (forget the Tomasz Bonin trial, if you will.) He won his WBA title in November with a 12-round decision over Nikolai Valuev in Germany, wobbling the gigantic Russian in the last with a cracking left hook, and before that put America's Monte Barrett down five times on the way to a spectacular stoppage in London. Then came that triumph over the horribly awkward if incredibly gutsy Mr Ruiz.
At 24-1 (22), Haye's one defeat, to cruiserweight Carl Thompson in five rounds in September 2004 at Wembley, proved a victory in disguise for the Bermondsey Bomber who has improved beyond all measure since and knows precisely when to unload on a tiring opponent, after punching himself out against the iron-jawed Thompson, one Hayemaker after another. Haye has won 14 on the spin since - 12 of them early. He brings excitement as well as a touch of vulnerability to his new heavyweight campaign. He also brings a smile and real charisma, although he himself fails to take himself too seriously. Women must be there but he loves boxing. If women weaken legs, his priorities are right - those Klitschkos.
Haye holds all the belts if he topples Wladimir and Vitali, both much bigger and heavier than the Londoner, true, but older and with more mileage. Two wins… Before he destructs and destroys like an an old Philly-killer, Haye just needs a Klitschko to sign a contract.

he would have to be trimmer. i thought he looke dheavy. after the fight he did say his preparation was compromised from not being able to spar in the month before the fight. perhaps this is why he didn't look 100% fighting fit.
