Aw, come on Rick. What about Jack Roper??

Tom . . . As a kid I'd hear my grandfather talk of Jack Roper. Roper worked in the film industry and my grandfather was at Wrigley Field (L.A.) when Roper was KOed by Joe Louis in one round. My grandfather also knew Jerry Quarry. I never heard my grandfather compare Roper with Quarry, and I never saw Roper fight, so who knows? I think they were about the same size, might have made for an interesting fight?

I meant it as a joke Rick. . . I just forgot to put in the " ." I know that Roper was no Jerry Quarry. He was just an opponent to showcase Louis to the West Coast boxing fans.

That was my impression of Roper, based on what I'd heard. However, I do appreciate your naming another high profile heavyweight from Southern Cal who fought for the title. I know Roper had over 100 fights.

Another Jerry Quarry Sparring Partner . . . (Notes from the Quarry training camp)

For the first Frazier fight, I mentioned that my friend Al "Kit" Boursse' had been a Quarry sparring partner, however, Al told me of a small heavyweight that gave Jerry a lot of good work in camp. His name was Charlie "The Emperor" Harris.

Jerry injured every sparring partner brought in to Grossinger's as he prepared for Joe Frazier. Jerry was surly in training, and took it out on the hired help. The only two to make it out without broken bones was Boursse' and Harris.

Al told me that Jerry had an ingrown toe nail and it was very sensitive. Al had a strange stance and often would step on opponents toes when moving in. One day, he stepped on Jerry's bad toe nail twice and Jerry was furious. Al said Jerry came after him full on and he was lucky to avoid Jerry's punches.

I don't know about anyone else but I always thought Glenn Campbell and Jerry Quarry looked alike.

I'd like to ask you West Coast guys something. Around 1990 I visited San Francisco to attend a relatives college graduation. It was the first time there for me. I wanted to see the old San Francisco Auditorium that held the old fights. I got there, I remember it was near city hall. I got inside and to my amazement , there was a boxing museum, on the 2nd floor I think.It was smallish in size ,but carried some great memoriabilia on local heroes like Art Aragon,etc etc. I read that a few years later, the place was remade into a concert hall honoring Bill Graham.

Can you tell me if the boxing museum is still inside ? If not, does san Fran have a boxing museum to visit. ? How about Los Angelas or other Calif. cities ? Thanks for any and all replies.

I don't know of any boxing museum in Calif.

There is a small exhibit commemorating Jim Jeffries at the Burbank Historical Society.

Floyd or Shane?

I think more of Shane Mosely's chances saturday than a 4-to-1 underdog.
Common sense tells me that Mayweather will likely end up with a close decision after twelve rounds.
However, my gut tells me that Shane is going to make a major statement this saturday, and he's going to upset "Pretty Money" or whatever he calls himself.
Shane's been around, and although pushing forty, he hasn't abused himself like the Toney's, etc. He also isn't pushing 100 fights like Duran, Chavez, etc. did at that age.
I'm not in a position to lay a lot of cash on an underdog, but I'm going to put a few bucks on Shane to score an upset.
Is it wishful thinking? I don't think so, I don't bet on wishful thinking. I think Shane is likely to score a big upset.
And Shane is an L.A. boy, not like the pitiful Chris Arreola, this guy is one of us. He came out of the Junior GG's.
I will never "buy" a Floyd Mayweather fight. I don't wish to contribute to his bank account.
However, one of friends on Desperate Housewives is buying the fight, so I'll bring something to the party and watch it at his house.

LOL! Paul, I think it was the hair and sideburns of the era, but now that you mention it, yeah, he kinda looked like a Quarry.
That was then, of course. I saw Glen Campbell at CBS about a dozen years ago. Man, he really had that "sucked up" look that a lot of drug addicts have when they are fighting their demons. Nothing reminded me of a Jerry Quarry look alike on that day.
