Mini Tournament series 1

Post by Robinson »

Those Aliens are back and they have abducted some top tier big
men and put them in a tourny to see who wins.

Here are the match ups and how they weighed in...

Doug Jones (181lbs) vs Floyd Patterson (182lbs)

Zora Folley (195lbs) vs Jerry Quarry (192lbs)

Eddie Machen (191lbs) vs Bob Foster (179lbs)

Harold Johnson (178lbs) vs Jimmy Ellis (191lbs)

How do you see these match up's playing out

Over 12 rounds.

Very, Very Interesting.

Doug Jones was good, but Patterson was great. Patterson by a mid-late stoppage., but Jones could have his moments and maybe score a knock down in the early rounds.

Eddie Machen could outpoint Quarry, so I think that Folley could do the same. Folley to jab his way to a close decision.

Foster fell short every time he meat a heyvyweight. Machen to score a late tko.

Many people rates Johnson very highly, but I think that Ellis would be the wrong opponent for him. Ellis to outspeed and outjab Johnson for an unpopular close decision.

Doug Jones (181lbs) vs Floyd Patterson (182lbs) -- Patterson by late rounds stoppage

Zora Folley (195lbs) vs Jerry Quarry (192lbs) -- Quarry by KO sometime after the 5th. Quarry was only 21 and learned a lot from the Machen encounter and subsequent fights to became a much better fighter over the next few years.

Eddie Machen (191lbs) vs Bob Foster (179lbs) -- Machen by KO in mid rounds

Harold Johnson (178lbs) vs Jimmy Ellis (191lbs) -- I'll go with Ellis by close decision

Interesting take...

I was tempted to go with Ellis but went Johnson. That's high praise you are giving Ellis because Johnson's an ATG LWH and Ellis was a near great HW who worked his way up from middleweight. I picked Foster because Machen at 191 wasn't a real HW and Foster seemed invincible except when he fought a real HW.

Foley would avoid a brawl with Quarry and win a points decision.

I'd like to see a certain poster's reaction to Ellis > Johnson...

Fun one.

Patterson KO8 over Jones. Frankly, I think Patterson would have just kicked the living **&^ out of Jones.

Quarry KO11 over Folley: Folley, more talented but less durable than Machen, starts fast and is way ahead at the mid-way point of the fight. After that, Folley starts to fade and Quarry starts to pour it on -- Folley tries to hang in there for the decision but doesn't quite make it.

Machen KO10 over Foster: Once Machen figures out he could take Foster's best shot, which he could, he starts to give the engine some gas-- and Foster can't keep pace.

Johnson W12 over Ellis: I think both these guys are under-rated so this is no disrespect to Ellis. I just think Johnson had the tools to outpoint him.

The fights are happening tonight. I shall post the after action
report. The weigh ins went well and all the lads are in good
shape.

Zora and Eddie were hanging out together chatting for a
fair bit like old mates. Doug seemed to keep to himself though
seemed friendly with Patterson, who had a subtle smile on
offer to all.
Harold was very reserved for the whole weigh in and press
confrence, but he cut an impressive figure when he weighed in.
Foster, the string bean that he is looked alot bigger than the
others while dressed, but when he weighed in you got a good
sense of where his 'lack' of weight is, when you see those poles
he calls legs.

Pizza and Pasta was downed by the guys after the weigh in and
the venue looks good.
