How good is Nino Valdes
How good is Nino Valdes
I would please like to know what was his strength of former Cuban heavyweight contender Nino Valdes and what was his weakness? I know one of his strength is beating his opponents in exchange punches.
..valdez was an okay heavyweight who could have been a lot better. he just didn't care enough.....and was unmotivated, and didn't like to train. even at that he was good enough to be a top contender, and was a big fighter for that era. although ezzard charles was past his prime when they fought, he was still a good fighter and valdez won by a clear margin....though he always spoke of charles as being a great fighter. charles just never got started that night....he said valdez kept outjabbing him which he didn't expect.
overall...valdez was a fair boxer, moved well for his size and had a good punch. maybe not championship material, but if he had had the fire he would have gone farther. even without the fire, it was known that the marciano camp was happy that archie moore won the elmination fight against him to earn his shot at rocky's title. they'd rather have rocky in with an old light heavy than a big true young heavy....and there were writers who thought valdez won that fight.

I think I am right in saying that the Moore vs Valdez fight was held outdoors at Cashman Field, Las Vegas on a bright May afternoon. Moore claimed after the fight that during the fight he constantly tried to move Valdez in the ring so the big Cuban was facing the bright sun and so his vision would be affected.Jaclem wrote: it was known that the marciano camp was happy that archie moore won the elmination fight against him to earn his shot at rocky's title. they'd rather have rocky in with an old light heavy than a big true young heavy....and there were writers who thought valdez won that fight.

I've always read that Moore soundly and clearly beat Valdes.Jaclem wrote:..valdez was an okay heavyweight who could have been a lot better. he just didn't care enough.....and was unmotivated, and didn't like to train. even at that he was good enough to be a top contender, and was a big fighter for that era. although ezzard charles was past his prime when they fought, he was still a good fighter and valdez won by a clear margin....though he always spoke of charles as being a great fighter. charles just never got started that night....he said valdez kept outjabbing him which he didn't expect.

..there were a few write ups at the time that said valdez had the edge. except for those, and i can't even remember who wrote them, i've read otherwise and even the ones who thought valdez had the edge didn't consider it a robbery...just that it was close. i'm with those who beleive moore won clearly...just from the large body of opinion in moore's favor.
