Bob Mirovic to fight on

Post by ryan711 »

BOB Mirovic looks set for a showdown with NSW boxing officials after vowing to undertake a CAT scan "and whatever else it takes" to remain in the fight game.

Sport Confidential can reveal that Mirovic, now 44 and winless in his past three heavyweight bouts, is back in the gym despite being iced in the opening round of his stink with rising Queenslander Alex Leapai on the Gold Coast last Thursday.

The three-time Australian heavyweight champion is now under serious pressure to retire after Leapai dropped him in the opening exchanges and then, with only seconds remaining in the first round, KO'd the popular Central Coast fighter with a thumping right.

"So I'm expecting officials to ask me to undergo a CAT scan," concedes Big Bob, for years regarded as the toughest hombre in our heavyweight ranks. "But I've had a couple of days to have a real long think about things and am determined to get myself in the best possible shape, both mentally and physically, to have another fight.

"If then I go no good, yeah, I'll call it a day."

Bob doesn't need a CT Scan, he needs a lobotomy to remove any futher notions of continuing his ring career.

Bob, check out the video and watch how you hit the deck for the last time. You were out cold before you hit the canvas! It is not a good look!

Big Bob iv loved watching you fight all over the world some wins some losses but now its time to give it away, so please do so before some other boxer hurts you badly and can never forgive himself. You say you love boxing then retire as a true warrior that you are.

I can name a handful of boxers that would fail MRI
IMO, I think all States should make it compulsory, as does South Australia. It's for their own good & long term welfare. There's a life after boxing.

If the authority make it compulsory, the authority should pay for it.

WHY??

If you were a plumber, electrician etc, would you expect respective regulator to pay for your protective gear??

Yep, any professional must pay for their own schooling, courses, registration, licences and licencing requirements.

How would anyone feel being Liu Gang, who's opponent Lance Hobson died, but not due to his punches??
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer
Lance was set upon by mugs & bashed something shocking a few months earlier in his hometown. At the time he was OZ feather champ, so he, his trainer & dad kept it under wraps.
Had even a CAT scan been compulsory, he'd be alive & kicking today.

I used to occasionally train at Mick Canavan's Ringwood boxing gym in those days, I remember Liu Gang training for that fight and then watching the fight live. My friend was the fight doctor that night. It was terrible watching Lance get up from his stool, punching the air then slowly collapsing to the canvas, still throwing punches. It devastated Liu Gang, he was never the same again, and changed ringside medical in Victoria too, I believe.

I think it affected every one who saw it and definitely everyone involved, MRI's are a good idea.

I was in Adelaide @ the time & watched the fight @ home on Foxtel, and sensed something was terribly wrong during the break.......so much so, I screamed stop the fight & get an ambulance. I felt absolutely ill when he got off the stool & started punching thin air. It was a shocking sight, which I'll never forget.

Promoter Mordey had workers comp, so his parents got 30k payout, which IMHO they didn't deserve.

So the underpaid fighters of Australia should be put to that expense? Safety boots and helmets are dirt cheap compared to an MRI.

Also plumbers earn more money. Some fighters only get $300 per fight. By the time they pay for all these scans, they would have no money. If it was compulsory you may see a decline in boxing.

If I remember correctly, isn't it about $800 to get an MRI done?
If I was to go pro, I don't think I could afford to outlay that cash to get one (at least at this point in time). As I'm in SA it'd be compulsory for me - and I believe any travelling boxers have to have one done too before competing in SA. (This was the case the last time I had a convo about it, so I don't know if it's still the case)
I agree with the health aspect of it and think it's a great idea from that side of things especially with how many brain injuries can occur from boxing but I think the comparison to a plumber is a lot different. A plumber is full-time and will earn a min of what, $40k a year? $16k as an apprentice? The average pay for a pro boxer is $200 a round? Fight what? 2-6 times a year? Based on 4round fights that's anywhere between $1600 - $4800 a year? A nd that's if you get fights.
What about an am boxer that wants to have one pro fight before retiring? A 4-rounder, you make no money.

I know I shouldn't be bringing money arguments into a discussion about health, but it is definitely a valid point.

Would an MRI be tax-deductable?
Or if promotors/medicare/etc were able to cover at least a portion of the cost it might be easier.
