Roberto Duran 1990-Julian Jackson 1990

Post by Bricks »

This fight was mooted for the WBC Middleweight championship but didnt take place as Duran vacated.

What would have happened in the battle between the legend of panama and the murderous puncher from the virgin islands?

Duran would have picked Jackson apart and stopped him. Too slippery and accurate.

I'm a Duran fan, but the great Roberto Duran gets dumped by Jackson much worse than what the great Thomas Hearns did to him in 1984. The Duran that beat Iran Barkley to me, was a MIRACLE. I have never seen nothing like it. If Duran would have gave Bakley a rematch, he would have get KO'd.

Jackson launches him into orbit in 1990.

Jackson is incredibly overrated on message boards. I was a huge fan of his, but no crude slugger wading in with his face trying to knock out Roberto Duran is getting the job done like that.

Duran was old and inconsistent, so a Jackson decision isn't unrealistic. No chance of a Hearnsesque KO imo. Jackson didn't have enough skill to work that out. If Duran was fat, Julian would win . If he was in shape, Jackson would get lit up.

Jackson didn't have enough skill to earn the Hearns-esque KO of the Duran then, that's for certain.

The Duran of '90, though? The guy couldn't even stay in-shape in (or near) his prime. He would have been a sitting duck for Jackson. Elmer is essentially right --- the fight with Barkley was all she wrote, where the credible Duran was concerned.

He wasn't gone enough to get ko'd by a fighter like Jackson. He was just too hard to hit clean. I just assumed he was talking about Duran from the Barkley fight. He fought Leonard after that and then didn't fight for a year or two.

So if he actually means the probably 200lb Duran drinking on his sofa that wasn't even active, Jackson by TKO sounds about right.

Duran was certainly long past his best days at that point but he still got himself into condition for fights like Pazienza 1 & Camacho 1. I couldn't see Jackson coming close to stopping either version of Duran there.

The fat slob that quit against Pat Lawlor? That's a different story but I wouldn't see the need of a mythical matchup there.

I'd rather not think about the Ali from the Berbick fight vs Razor Ruddock.

Your argument carries a lot of weight

I mean a career spoiler/mover/boxer whatever you want to call him like herol graham who had a decentish punch but nothing extra heavy duty was outboxing and had cut up jackson to ribbons in the course of 4 rounds. Sure at the end graham made a mistake and jackson was clearly baiting Graham into making that mistake and walking into a one punch kayo.

The fact is to lead a guy like graham into a trap like that is exceptional and Jackson also did it to norris so lets not underestimate jacksons ability to read the way a fight is going and pull it out.

But like you i cant see him doing that to a Duran. Only hearns could do that and jackson was no hearns in terms of boxing ability and speed.

Duran would be motivated knowing he was facing a power puncher like jackson.Even if he wasnt motivated he wouldnt be kayoed imo. He just had too much savvy and smarts.

At the same time I cant see the duran of this time and lets base it on his most recent fights, the barkley and 3rd leonard fight, being baited and trapped into a kayo against a non moving boxer/slugger like jackson. Roberto at this stage used to love beating these guys mano-mano with his boxing technique and knowledge. The barkley fight was a masterclass of a aged duran with his macho pride using his head and experience to beat down a very tough barkley and barkley had not as much power as Jackson (who did) but he was faster yet a definite powerpuncher himself. Duran would be respectful of the power jackson had but would systematiclly beat and cut him down thats my view.

Yes as the thread post indicates Duran as WBC middleweight champ was ordered in early 1990 to fight a mandatory defence against no 1 contender Jackson.

So that Duran if he had taken the fight would have been a relatively active one as he had just fought SRL 12 rounds a few months back so had been in training.

If it goes past the 3rd, I'd like Duran's chances. Jackson is actually a little overrated on here. In his 30th pro fight, Mike McCallum went toe to toe with him and it was over in 2 rounds.

No question that Duran was a far better fighter, but by 1990 he was done at a meaningful level. I fear Jackson gets him out of there.
