I would significantly favor Holmes in both fights. George would have a punchers chance in his prime vs a pre-prime Holmes. Probably a bit more than that. If anybody had more heart than Holmes, I haven't seen them fight.

Foreman wins both matcups. Holmes is seriously overrated on these forums too.
Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
Foreman wins both matchups easily.
The 1973 Foreman would do a 2-3 round demolition job on Holmes. Likely leaving larry out for 10 on the canvas.
The 94 foreman was just too defensivelly canny to be bothered by larry at that stage and would put some combos together and end the fight with a couple of knockdowns in the 8th.
The 1978-1985 Holmes would have beaten the 87-89 Foreman tho! The 1991 Foreman forget about it that foreman was seasoned in his second run

Just out of curiosity; exactly which fight in the '73 Foremans career shows us how George would have demolished Holmes? Just take a quick look at his career and find that one fight against a tall, quality, mobile defensive fighter that shows us how he would have done it.mugabi wrote:The 1973 Foreman would do a 2-3 round demolition job on Holmes. Fair question and my answer is my gut instinct tells me his destruction of the almost incomparably determined and durable Frazier and his bombing of a Norton who gave Ali a boxing hell for 36 rounds tell me all I need to know. The Great John L wrote:Just out of curiosity; exactly which fight in the '73 Foremans career shows us how George would have demolished Holmes? You could probably give me a convincing argument against that scenario and thats fair enough.
But in my opinion Holmes would not have been able to survive Foremans early onslaught and incredible combinations. I rate big george mk 1 very very high. I have him down as one of the four greatest HW's of all time

Thanks. So, it doesn't bother you that George struggled against the few actual boxers that he fought?mugabi wrote:I dont need to show one fight against "a tall, quality, mobile defensive fighter etc".....his destruction of the almost incomparably determined and durable Frazier and his bombing of a Norton who gave Ali a boxing hell for 36 rounds tells me all I need to know. The Great John L wrote:Just out of curiosity; exactly which fight in the '73 Foremans career shows us how George would have demolished Holmes? Holmes would not have been able to survive Foremans early onslaught. Thats my opinion.People may drag up Earnie Shavers name, but Foreman was no earnie shavers he had incredible combinations and strength to go with his power.
Ali pulled off an incredible feat but to this day i beleive if foreman had got a rematch in the states in 1976 he would have kayoed ali
These are just my opinions. I rate big george mk 1 very very high. I have him down as one of the three greatest HW's of all time
Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
When george travelled to exotic hot places like he did against Jimmy Young and Ali, his stamina let him down. Than again he also travelled to kingston jamaica, and caracas for norton. But those fights didnt go too many rounds. So it is a rounds thing and since i dont think Larry would make it out of the early rounds In my mind its moot.
I just dont rate Holmes as highly as the Ali of the 70's and think the Young fight was a abberation with no disrespect to Jimmy who was a terrific spoiler and boxer who was robbed out of many fights.
But I would agree those two losses offer a blueprint of how to beat that foreman.I just dont see Holmes for all his skill being able to do what Ali and Young did.

Don't forget Foreman was one punch from defeat against Ron Lyle. That fight was in the balance. Great fight, but I guess George was coming off from his first loss.

Don't you think that maybe Holmes might have moved around a little and survived a few more rounds, or are you thinking that Holmes would have stood right in front him like Frazier and Norton did?mugabi wrote:When george travelled to exotic hot places like he did against Jimmy Young and Ali, his stamina let him down. Remind me again when it's your turn to explain who & when Holmes faced anyone or anything like Foreman, prior to Tyson, which showed us he would have, "boxed the ears off" Foreman? The Great John L wrote:Just out of curiosity; exactly which fight in the '73 Foremans career shows us how George would have demolished Holmes? Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
Foreman was a much bigger hurdle than Shavers. Then again, Larry fought 12 rds with Shavers without even getting touched. It's difficult to find examples of other top 5-10 Heavyweights faced with the same style. That isn't going to happen. I'll tell what else isn't going to happen, Larry holmes wouldn't get demolished in 2 or 3 rds by a grizzly bear.
LMAO at anyone picking George in the old man match. I think comeback George gets a bad rap a lot of times. But he would get busted up in a bad way and he knew that better than anyone else.

The young man matchup would have probably come out in Larry's favor to my way of thinking. However, I sure wouldn't have bet much money.
The old man matchup doesn't interest me.

I think young Foreman would have knocked out young Holmes but in the geezer matchup I favor Holmes by a decision.
Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
I'd go 60-40 Holmes. Maybe 70-30...
Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
Holmes would have moved , he would have moved. But Foreman was incredible at cutting off the ring. It took all of Ali's nous to dance away early in their fight from George and hit back with sharp counters. The Great John L wrote:Don't you think that maybe Holmes might have moved around a little and survived a few more rounds, or are you thinking that Holmes would have stood right in front him like Frazier and Norton did?mugabi wrote:When george travelled to exotic hot places like he did against Jimmy Young and Ali, his stamina let him down. I just dont think Holmes could take the thudding shots to the arms and body and chest like Ali could and his detterent. Foremans punches to the arms could cause inertia and take away a guys legs.

Ali had nothing on Larry when it comes to toughness. Not a thing.
Re: Holmes (78) V Foreman (73) And Holmes (95) V (Foreman (94)
Here's a quote from a gentleman who went fifty four rounds with both of them:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Ali had nothing on Larry when it comes to toughness. Not a thing.
Frank: Who was stronger, Muhammad Ali or Larry Holmes?
Norton: Oh Ali definetly, Ali was very strong but because he wasn't a one punch KO artist it is overlooked. Hitting Ali in the body or on the arms was like hitting a piece of cement.

Would this be a testimonial to one's toughness?

I once saw that quote attributed to Ali talking about Frazier. It sounds more like Ali's style of speech than Frazier's. You sure, ThatOne?

As per usual your panties are instantly ruffled with any Ali discussion. Where did I say Ali wasn't tough as they come? It's a testament to how tough Larry was.
