John Murray looking for early stoppage.

Post by HS Press »

European title contender John Murray is looking for early success on Friday night and not take it down to the wire like his favourite football team Manchester City.

“I am aiming to win in style and well within the distance” a focused Murray said.

To claim the vacant European Lightweight title Murray will have to overcome the talented and gutsy Gary Buckland at the Kingsway Leisure Centre, Widnes this Friday 7th May, also on the line will be Murray’s British title.

This exciting double title fight is being shown live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 10pm.

“I was hoping that Spurs would slip up at the weekend but that didn’t happen, City are still in a great position but they need to show true strength and beat Tottenham on Wednesday to stand a chance of stealing that last Champions League spot, this is going to be more like a derby game.” Murray added

“It’s a shame my fight isn’t a week later as I was hoping to have some of the City players ringside cheering me on, but with them playing away against West Ham in the final game of the season on Sunday they will not be able to, but hopefully they will watch me secure the European belt on Sky Sports.”

City players including Roque Santa Cruz, Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards were all ringside last October to witness Murray beat former European and British title holder Thaxton in 4 exhilarating rounds.

“Whatever happens on Friday night I can safely say that the venue will be noisy with my very own Barmy Army singing my name” Murray concluded

Tickets for the show at the Kingsway Leisure Centre, Widnes are on sale from the Matchroom Sport box office on 01277 359900, tickets are priced at £30 for unreserved seating and £50 for ringside.

I would be shocked if Buckland were to pull this off.

Murray has had trouble with the weight. (has come in overweight and lost titles). This fight came on short notice so weight will have to have been cut off. He is a come forward fighter and will be taking punches... he is 1/12 to win...

Makes you think though doesn't it ? - Murray a long time out of the ring while Buckland has been busy. Tony Borg obviously has to talk up his man in the interview but he wouldn't go so far as to predict a stoppage if he wasn't REALLY confident surely

He was very, very low over the weight. Wasn't it an issue to do with the surface the scale was on? Wasn't he bang on back at the gym before leaving for the weigh in?
I seem to recall he got stuck in traffic on the way to the weigh in, and didn't have time to get the weight off. It was only something like 2 ounces, if I recall. It can't have been that much of an issue, because he battered Lawton. I expect him to hammer Buckland as well, provided he's not too rusty.

He'll probably win, but there are question marks and at 1/12, I'm not willing to find out.

John is bang on schedule apparently for his weight.

Every fighter is "bang on schedule" for the weight.
