Floyd Mayweather Versus
Floyd Mayweather Versus
In light of the Pretty Boy's destruction of Sugar Shane Mosley in a fight where he abandoned his safety first posture and pretty much stood toe to toe how does he fare against these other great welterweights?*
Sugar Ray Leonard
Tommy Hearns
Roberto Duran
Wilfredo Benitez
Ayub Kalule
* I realize they all didn't spend their entire career there.

Sugar Ray Leonard UD15 Floyd Mayweather - close but clear decision

To all those stating that Hearns would KO Mayweather. Do you believe that Floyd's speed and defense is that inferior to Sugar Ray Leonard's?

That sounds about right, but I think he would have given Duran quite a few problems as well.dempseyfire wrote:He beats Kayule in a tough fight.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
Well, yeah I'd favour a Hearns KO thinking about it. Mayweather is tiny in comparison. He'd have to run and run for the first few rounds! But he knows all the tricks and if Hearns over committed he'd catch him coming in. If he got past the first few rounds he'd stand even more of a chance. As I said, I'd favour Hearns, but Mayweather is such a crafty customer I don't see it as a foregone conclusion at all.sg1985 wrote:I don't think his speed or defence is any less than Leonards, but his chin can't stand up to Hearns, surely you can't think it would? Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
Hindsight is a great thing. But its fair to say from the way Mosley became old in the second round after he couldnt take mayweather out that the long inactivity had got to shane.ThatOne wrote:In light of the Pretty Boy's destruction of Sugar Shane Mosley in a fight where he abandoned his safety first posture and pretty much stood toe to toe how does he fare against these other great welterweights?*

based on floyds prime against their respective primes.
Sugar Ray Leonard- SRL at 147 does everything Flloyd does but much better and faster and in an entertaining way. SRL stops him in 12.
Tommy Hearns - Flloyd has his hands up real good and likes to counter. But the Motor City cobra could bust a man to the body like no one except maybe Mike mccallum. One sided 15 round demolition and PBF is ruined a near shutout. Hearns dances and lets Flooyd follow him. When your 6ft 2 and long armed you dont need to go looking for someone from their chest. U can do it at distance.I simply cannot see Tommy losing to PBF. PBF isnt the great finisher ray leonard was.
Roberto Duran- The duran who beat SRL (ie in condition and not suffering cramps or complacent) wins. PBF cannot move like leonard did. And duran handled a great counter puncher lke hagler so flloyd wont be too problematic. 15 round points decision to Duran.
Wilfredo Benitez- Mayweather outpoints wilfred in a defensive technical match over 15 rounds
Ayub Kalule- PBF stops him in 7.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
No but I'm sure Hearns hits a hell of a lot harder than Mosley and if it were Hearns in the 2nd round of that fight landing that same right, Floyd would do more tha just buckle.Shazam! wrote:To all those stating that Hearns would KO Mayweather. Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
While Floyd may have it rough and lose against most of these, I don't see him being knocked out.
I think he proved to have an awesome chin by being able to stand up to a huge flush shot from Mosley. On top of that he's a defensive fighter.
I think Hearns would likely win especially over 12 rounds.
A Leonard vs Mayweather fight would be harsh on the eyes, I would still go with Leonard though.
I actually give the advantage to Mayweather against Duran. Mayweather's plan would be to box and move he wouldn't stand in there with him like Leonard did in the first fight.
The Benitez fight could be very ugly no matter the decision there would be no clear winner.
I think Mayweather boxes his way to a UD against Kalule.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
I'd say Floyd is a shade slower than Leonard, but not to the extent that it would make a difference in this fight and I would rate his defense as better than Leonard's. However, he is considerably less powerful than Leonard, meaning Hearns could be more offensively minded in this matchup. Taking into account the huge size, power and reach advantages - I can't see Floyd winning this more than once out of 10.To all those stating that Hearns would KO Mayweather. Do you believe that Floyd's speed and defense is that inferior to Sugar Ray Leonard's?
Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
Beats Benitez and Kalule
Duran is too close to call for me.
Hearns is a matchup nightmare for Floyd. Floyd doesn't hit hard enough to bother Hearns and Hearns was a bomber.
Leonard wins a boring close decision. Something like 116-112 in a 12 rounder.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
No but that isnt the point. The point is hearns handspeed on those long jabs and straights is just as fast if not faster than SRL. Sure ray had faster hooks but imo the hit man had astonishing velocity on those jabs and straight rights.Shazam! wrote:To all those stating that Hearns would KO Mayweather. Plus Hearns was a great counter puncher as well. We're talking about a prime tommy at 147.
I have given PBF the benefit of the doubt in that his chin and skill would help him survive 15 but he would take a shellacking.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
An interesting point to ponder is how much Leonard and Hearns would drain down in an actual fight with Mayweather, being that both were naturally bigger. Floyd is plateauing in weight in the mid-150s, Leonard was over 160 and Hearns was eventually a LHW while still fairly effective.
Regardless though Mayweather loses to Duran, Leonard, and Hearns, and beats Kayule and Benitez.

The Shane fight IMO says that Hearns would easily KO him. Floyd wouldn't see those bombs coming like he did with Shane. Hearns was faster stronger, bigger, and a better boxer than Shane. The only advantage Shane has over Hearns is a chin giving Mayweather a punchers chance which isn't alot. Hearns is hands down probably top 3 hardest punchers at Welter EVER. For me to believe Mayweather would've stood up to those shots, he would've took Shane's flush shots like he was Marvin Hagler. Just a bad nightmarish matchup for Floyd and anyone else not named Hagler or Leonard, two very big welters.

The advantage Floyd does hold over Hearns is thinking. Like I said though I still think Hearns beats him.

Re: Floyd Mayweather Versus
Hagler was never a welterweight, only ever a middeweight. Over his whole career his weight was always in the 155lb-163lb range. When he fought Hearns it was at middleweight. The Shane fight IMO says that Hearns would easily KO him. Floyd wouldn't see those bombs coming like he did with Shane.
