Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Later on that Evening ,Tex Cobb came into the lobby of the hotel that Norton was staying at ,and was yelling for him to come down and out into the parking lot and finish the fight.
Apparently Cobb was angry because he had bet his entire purse money($200,000)on himself to win.
Norton called the police.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Cobb looked like a meen mofo. And also he was a karate guy (full contact)
Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Even tho he didnt have great power, Cobb could take a punch and was one of those fighters who didnt look like he could be intimidated.
Norton looked intimatated some, probably because he was getting older, making a comeback after having been blasted out in one round by Earnie Shavers and almost TKOd in the 10th round by Scott LeDoux
in his 2 previous fights.

Cobb was never stopped in fifty or so fights, except by a boxer named Dee Collier. Was that fight legit?Brutu wrote:Even tho he didnt have great power, Cobb could take a punch and was one of those fighters who didnt look like he could be intimidated.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Norton came very close to getting stopped towards the end of the 9th.
Norton was absolutely terrible when he was forced backwards.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Norton looked like he was almost going to fall down walking back to his corner after the bell rang to end the ninth round.
That sure must have been some pep talk they gave him to come out swinging like that for the 10 th round.

That fight was live on a cable channel(BET if I remember right),and went off the air before the decision was announced.
I didnt see it on TV,but I remember later that evening on the 10 clock news,on the sports, the guy said we been getting a number of calls of people wanting to know who won it.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
Cobb took some big whacks in his career and his punch resistance was starting to erode. Prior to the Dee Collier fight he was decked in the 9th rd by Eddie Gregg.
Dee Collier if you've never seen him is a beast, absolutely massive guy who could obviously hurt anybody who stood right in front of him & let him load up, as a fading Cobb presumably did.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vrs Ken Norton(1980)
look how big Cobb looks against Norton compared to Jerry Quarry.
Norton sure did not look like he appreciated those rights to the body by Cobb.
I think Cobbs skills and career went down hill after he(allegedly) used cocaine.
Which(IMOP) may have been prior to his fight with Larry Holmes.
I say that, becuse if you ever saw the footage of Cobb training for the Holmes fight and the interview,
he appears to be on some substance abuse.
Also that enormously long and wide ring Cobb chased after Holmes in did not help im sure.

I got to go with the judge that gave it to Cobb.
Who would you rather have been after the fight?
(Ok no wise cracks like "Norton cuz he won and was paid more".

Did you add an extra zero there? That sounds highly extravagant for those times and for a fighter of Cobb's stature.Brutu wrote:Later on that Evening ,Tex Cobb came into the lobby of the hotel that Norton was staying at ,and was yelling for him to come down and out into the parking lot and finish the fight.

Three months after the fight with Paul Solomon,Cobb went Hollywood and was cast as the boxer opposite Jon Voight in THE CHAMPBrutu wrote:Here is a rare clip of an early Tex Cobb fight.

Norton was the clear winner, IMO. He won more rounds without question.BoxBuzz wrote:I got to go with the judge that gave it to Cobb.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vs Ken Norton(1980)
Ok, he may well have, Which is why I asked the question, which I do think is relevant.
So Norton may have won the battle, But it sure looked like Cobb won the war.
I think Norton was feeling more "beaten" at the end of the fight.
Cobb was up and rowdy at nights end, Norton probably had one of "his people" call the cops for him, as even his dialing finger was probably hurting.

I got that from Ken Norton's autobiography GOING THE DISTANCE page 168.
It was a MAPS promotion(Muhammad Ali Promotions,Inc)(even tho Ali only sold his name and had nothing to do with the company)
Ross Fields alias Harold Smith president.
and you know were he got all that money to throw around for those fights he promoted in 1979-1980 ?lol.

Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vs Ken Norton(1980)
Wow, no wonder they didn't last long.
Re: Randall"Tex"Cobb vs Ken Norton(1980)
I agree, Norton won it clearly but it was also very clear that Norton was well past it. He could no longer keep a good pace and was fighting in spurts, clearly bothered by the pressure Cobb applied. In his prime Norton would have gone to town on Cobb in a big way.dempseyfire wrote:Norton was the clear winner, IMO. I believed you the first time, you put a good bit of research in for these threads. I remember Smith and his brief time in the sport well.
