Dan Dawson v WBO Title holder Dzinziruk

Post by Marlin »

Word is that Sergiy Dzinziruk's opponent (Sherzod Husanov) has pulled out of their upcoming WBO title bout and Dan Dawson has gotten the call up as a replacment.

Dawson was already training for a fight so he is good to go. What a great opportunity for The Rock!

Great oppurtunity for Dan to win a belt. At his ideal weight also.

If they do fight, it will be the first fight for either in over a year.

It'll be good to see Daniel back in the ring under boxing rules, I would like to see him and Geale in a rematch without the corner/trainer/management shambles of the last time they met distracting him, I think it would be a much more competitive fight.

Im not so sure, Dan looks far better at 154 IMO. Why move up when he can make 154 fairly easily.

i think its sad that in his home state that promotes bad fights like greens last few that dan dawson gets a 2 sentence mention that he has signed a fight for a world title

really hoped it would be some sought of deal as he would only be the second west aussie to do it and the first aussie with world title in kickboxing and muay thai

Dawson accepts offer SYDNEY
May 7, 2010

Australian boxer Daniel Dawson says a world title fight at short notice against an unbeaten champion next week is the right opportunity at the right time.

Kalgoorlie-born Dawson, 32 (34-1, 24 Kos), has accepted the offer to fight WBO light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk, 34 (36-0, 22 Kos) in Santa Ynez, California on May 14 with just 15 days notice.

It will be the most significant and difficult fight yet for Dawson, whose only professional blemish was a points loss to compatriot Daniel Geale in a fight for the vacant IBO middleweight title in December 2007.

Dawson, who has been based in Los Angeles for just over a year, said he had no hesitation in taking on such a big fight at short notice.

"I was preparing to fight on May 27....I'm probably in the best shape I've ever been," Dawson said. "It's the right opportunity at the right time. In boxing, timing definitely plays such a big part."

Working under renowned US-based Australian trainer Justin Fortune, Dawson hasn't fought since February last year.

However, Germany-based southpaw Dzinziruk has had an even longer lay off, not fighting since November 2008.

"I've watched quite a few of his fights and I've always fought really well against southpaws," Dawson said.

"The calibre of fighters he has fought over his last three or four contests, I see myself being very troublesome for him.

"I think he will have a lot of trouble with my movement, my power and my speed and boxing ability."

Meanwhile, a major promotion at Wollongong Entertainment Centre on June 2 was announced yesterday, featuring several prominent Australian boxers.

Heading the card will be world top-10 ranked middleweight Geale defending his IBF Pan-Pacific title against losing Australian Contender finalist Kariz Kariuki.

Junior middleweight Robert Medley, who lost his last bout to Anthony Mundine, will also feature, possibly in a Commonwealth title fight.

Featherweight Billy Dib tackles experienced Mexican Ivan Hernandez for the vacant IBF Pan-Pacific title.

Dib wants to fight Indonesia's WBA featherweight champion Chris John.

Australian Contender winner Garth Wood tackles former Queensland super middleweight champion William Hadlow as he waits for his prize of a fight with Mundine later in the year.

Wood has been challenged to a fight by former world title contender Shannan Taylor who will fight Ben Costello in a middleweight contest.

The card also includes a grudge rematch between Contender opponents Nader Hamdan and Junior Talipeau.
