Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
Despite his failure to secure a permanent TV deal, MH has been getting his fighters appearances on other promoters shows.
Would Hennessey uniting with Frank Maloney or Barry Hearn be a good thing for the sport?

I think its good that the promoters are working together to put on some cracking show's. The 2 live fights have really improved Friday Fight Night.
Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
Probably yes. Matchroom and Hennessey combined probably could rival Warren as the main player in promotion in this country. As said above better quality shows and i think everybody will be happy to see some of Hennesseys boxers getting fights again
Overall though Hennesseys inability to get a tvdeal is a symptom in the declineof the sport. If SKY scaled down their boxing output or stopped it completely boxing would have nowhere to go and increasingly SKY is able topull the shots in terms of which fights and dates fighters get.

I like the way people refer to the sport in decline as a valid reason for non tv coverage. No offense intended wrimc but I think its down to the promoters. UFC have ESPN, five and more besides. It's down to salesmanship and a solid business. Two things boxing seriously lacks.

Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
Why would there be any need for a merger ?
Indeed why would another Promotor be interested in a merger ?
Hennessey retains control of his fighters, and sub contracts their services to Matchroom.
A deal is struck on the apportionment of the cash.
Absolutely no need for Mick to lose control of his fighters, and no need for any other Promotor to take over the whole of the business and the incumbant costs.
Do Joe Public really care who's promoting the show as long as their favourite boxers are being shown ?

Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
Whilst Iopenly admitHennessey has been one of the poorer promoters in terms of management of his boxers and in some cases "actual promotion"i think his inabilityto get a tv deal has its roots somehwere other than his own failings. His ITV shows were of very good quality and he is the only promoter with a stable that can rival that of Warren in termsof names and strength in depth or was anyway. After his of the deal with ITV SKY would not take him back despite the fact Maloney Hearn Warren and Hatton all are able to gain dates. I am only speculating either Mick himself has not accepted a possible deal with sky...unlikely as he desperately needs TV or he is somehow being frozen out despite the fact he has one of the best stables Froch Witter Murray Barker Fury etc etcjizzle wrote:Hennesseys inability to get a tv deal is a symptom of hennesseys inability to get a tv deal.wrimc wrote:Overall though Hennesseys inability to get a tvdeal is a symptom in the declineof the sport. Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
I don't really think so.
Most of the Matchroom shows (bar Prizefighter and that last Audley one) are either purse bids on title fights that nobody else wants won for pittance, or as an outlet for other promoters to get their fighters on TV-most notably Tommy Gilmour and now seemingly Hennessy.
I don't think they need to merge particularly. Matchroom have TV dates that need filling, and Hennessy has fighters that need a TV date, and that's how things have been and worked fairly successfully for a couple of months. Hennessy won't want to merge in case somebody all of a sudden wants to show somebody like Froch, Barker or Murray on a regular basis. If they are tied up with a Matchroom contract on Sky, it would be ruddy hard for them to find a loophole for them to fight on another channel.
Basically, things are working fine as they are at the mo on a temporary basis until Hennessy can get a TV deal of his own.

So why is Matchroom who have a limited stable and only really offer prizefighter given so many tv dates and Hennessey a stable deep with talent capable of putting on good shows unable to get any dateson SKY?

Good point and makes you wonder why Hennessy hasn't been able to secure a tv deal.wrimc wrote:chrisfinch wrote:I don't really think so.

Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
It only points to that they would rather deal with Hearn than Hennessey which is a worrying situation if you are a Froch, Barker, Murray, Fury etc because Hennessey would be getting a cut for doing nothing!wrimc wrote:chrisfinch wrote:I don't really think so.

Hearn has a good relationship with Sky and tv in general with his involvement in snooker and darts I think that's why he has a boxing contract rather than Hennessy.
It is good that they seem to be working together and with that Hennesy seems to be talking more positively about the future of his fighters.

Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
As ourkid says, it's probably mainly down to the amount of stuff he sticks on the channel anyway. Not just snooker and darts, but pool, fishing etc. It's as cosy a relationship as you'll get, and if it wasn't for them, a hell of a lot of british title fights would go untelevised or just not happen at all.wrimc wrote:So why is Matchroom who have a limited stable and only really offer prizefighter given so many tv dates and Hennessey a stable deep with talent capable of putting on good shows unable to get any dateson SKY?chrisfinch wrote:I don't really think so.

And didn't Hennessy piss sky off when Froch had that one fight in early 2008 on ITV-Rybacki I think-when he still had a deal with Sky? Maybe that's something to do with it. He put on some really good cards on sky, and the first few on ITV, but the last 6 months of Hennessy shows on ITV4 were absolutely abysmal. Maybe a combination of those factors put them off?
Plus, at the minute Sky are getting his fighters included in the Matchroom deal, so they are hardly complaining.
Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
As mentioned already, Hearn has delivered for Sky big-time particularly with the darts and more recently the Prizefighter series. He's well looked after by Sky and too right to.wrimc wrote:chrisfinch wrote:I don't really think so.

Barry Hearn is a promotional genius!
And it doesnt matter that Matchroom have a limited stable. Hearn is getting other promoters to fill his Sky dates with their top fighters, all under the Matchroom banner. Matchroom have claught because they have Sky behind them hence why they can get people like Audley Harrison a Euro title shot effectively off the back of nothing.

Has Warren got any tv dates after this Saturday?
Re: Is a Hennessey Merger on the way?
Not many more date left until the boxing "season" start again in the autumn. WOrld Cup always messes with TV schedules.

As for the title of the thread - FFS - surely it is blatantly obvious Meaty Mick and Barmy Barry are helping each other out at present until something better comes along for the both of them - again FFS this is business.

From reading the posts in this topic it sounds like a good partnership for Mick if he linked up with Matchroom.
With Cleverly with allegedly, I hope we don't have to wait til the Autumn to see him fight again.

Cheers, Without meaning to use a pun - Its a clever thing to do for Nathan to concentrate on the exams, as whatever happens in his boxing career, he has the qualifications to fallback on.HomeOfBritishBoxing wrote:i knw rob, clev has improtant exams tho up until june, i could be wrong..august is a bad month for boxing so september is the only time possible for clevWelshDevil wrote:From reading the posts in this topic it sounds like a good partnership for Mick if he linked up with Matchroom.

Would make him a dangerous promoter though - one who has a maths degree.
