I think 132lb Damon Allen did outstanding at the national golden glove tournament
hes only 17 and that was only his second open tournament, he made it to the finals and had a close fight with eric de leon!
Good Job Damon Allen and keep up the good work

Overall, what did you think of the judging? I was only there on Wednesday and I saw several bad decisions.
As usual with any tournament, there were some decisions that weren't very popular. Anytime a bout is close, you will have people complaining and there were a lot of close bouts. Another thing is with the clickers versus computer key pads, more punches get counted and it isn't just the big, obvious ones. The judges count some of the pitter-pats and shoe-shines, but boxers and coaches have to be prepared for that difference in scoring systems. There will be people who will complain at the US Championships because those punches won't get counted and they won at NGG and won't win at the US Chp. Overall, it was a great tournament with a lot of excellent competition. It is what our boxers need to get ready for 2012.
jdf wrote:i enjoyed the tournament. i was really impressed with the younger russell and the allen kid. they competed hard for their ages. amateur boxing has two bright stars in the future with them. i also liked the big shimmel kid and jakabson from chicago, both had good boxing form. i know there were some close draws but that only tells me the competition level was that good. i feel privlidged to have seen all the bouts and big names, i wont forget it for sometime. i know working all week and driving 80 miles to see the bouts everyday has wore me out, i need a break now myself.
Jordan Shimmell and Robert Jekabson had a good bout in the semi-finals. Both of them want to get better and Jordan and I drove to Chicago a few months ago so Jordan could spar Robert. They knew that they might end up boxing each other, but they also knew that tough sparring will make them better. It did.
The tournament was a lot of fun and yes there were some great bouts and excellent competition.

Thank Jonathan at FrontPage. I just cut and pasted. Hope we can keep getting updates and I may even head down for semis and final and get some video. Not sure yet.
-I've seen a couple of his fights and been really impressed with his quickness, reactions, snap, and athleticism.
-A couple of people have remarked to me that he's small for a light heavy; that he could be fighting at 165#. Sure enough, in the video of the champ'ship bout posted on Youtube it definitely looked like although he was the faster man and the more accurate puncher, he was vulnerable to his opponent's wrestling and roughhousing tactics. He was pushed and pulled around the ring against his will several times.
-Someone posted a comment on my blog that he got three gift decisions out of five bouts. Sour grapes, or is there anything to that?
Any comments from anyone who saw him fight at Nats?
Rob is a small light-heavy. He typically weighs in the low to mid 170's. There really isn't anything wrong with it. He could starve himself and dehydrate to make 165 and then be weak or eat everyday and drink liquids and perform well at 178. Remember that is exactly what Andre Ward did in 2004 and he won a gold medal. Rob is trying to repeat that feat.
As far as gift decisions, I can't say. I didn't watch all of his bouts, but everytime I watched parts of his bouts he was doing well.
I wasn't impressed with Brant, per his videos. I seen two I thought he lost. Infact the first one I saw didn't mention names or show a winner. When I looked at the second video, where I could then see what fighter Brant was, I said the kid got robbed in the first fight I saw. Then I felt the kid in the second fight got robbed.
