Rewatching Bowe vs Hide..

Post by dookus »

In spite of the number of times Hide went over, he really had some excellent moments in this fight - winning the first 2 rounds, rocking Bowe in the 4th, and really badly in the 5th...while falling over every time Bowe landed anything solid (and sometimes not even that). Makes you wonder what he could have done with a decent set of whiskers..

If he had any brains at all he would have won that fight and been a huge star in the late 90's. Bowe didnt have a clue what to do in the 1st 2 rounds against Herbie.

hide wasted all his energy very early on. he showed nice speed, power and movement, but didn't pace himself and was careless. the man is a bit of a nutter and didn't seem to box to a good plan.

I might sound ridiculous but I also think Hide looked very good in the first round against Vitali, was timing him quite well without really taking anything in return. Of course then we all know what happened next

Yeah, Vitali almost hit him, and that was enough for Hide.

it wasn't a phantom punch. vitali tried to line up the right cross, with a pawing jab. the jab unfortunately put him down and out, and the right hand sailed harmlessly over his head.

it's a bit embarrassing, as vitali usually scores late stoppages from lots and lots of punches. not from just a piddling little jab thrown with no snap in it.

Hide looked like he wanted out of there on both occassions.
He could of lasted longer against vitali if he had more belief in himself and he could have beaten bowe had he shown a bit more composure and a bit of bottle.

Hide doesn't have anything left imo, he was starting to blow out of his arse in prizefighter.

Yeah shame after the first 2 rounds Hide kinda lost the plot. I think if he'd had a better trainer/training camp he would of had a better, more successful career because despite being a blown up cruiser he had a heavyweight punch. But then he was 2 time heavyweight champ.

I remember Danny Williams saying Herbie has no recuperation powers, when joseph chingangu sparked Hide in 2 rounds in 2001. Chingangu was a no hoper too.

Neither Bowe nor Vitali seemed to connect with a conclusive KO punch, yet Herbie was continually up and down the canvas.... if you closely his eyes are totally glazed too.... makes you wonder how bad he'd have been had those punches REALLY connected.

As for Hide outboxing Bowe early on..... he'd never have KO'd Bowe, he could have danced around all he wanted to, but Bowe was always going to catch him and then its lights out for glass jaw

You're right. Looking back on it gives me hope that Haye can use similar tactics, more intelligently, to a greater effect.

True he had his moments, but in true world class, Hide was nothing more than a flash in the pan. Bowe bounced him up and down off the canvas so many times it was a complete massacre, and I bet Riddick had seriously under estimated him going in. The truth is Hide never stood a chance again Bowe...or Vitali.

Vitali put him down with a miss, thats all that needs to be said about Herbie Hide.

He talked the talk but failed to walk the walk when his chance came!

Hide's chin was poor, but think what people are forgetting is how inexperienced he was compared to those guys. About eight amateur fights, no real world-class experience at cruiser, caught Michael Bent on the right note then was fed to Bowe. Klitschko was just a disaster waiting to happen. Shame the cruiserweight division hadn't upped the weight limit earlier in his career as I think he'd have done really well in the lower division. Just too small and fragile against the real juggernauts of the heavyweight division.

Hide always had a poor chin, and it was also his temperament, he planted his feet too much and loaded up with wild punches which left him wide open.

If hide had been carrying two nuclear power knuckledusters he wouldn't have won, at some point, he was going to get hit, and then....well we know the rest.

Jim McDonnell told me he was the most naturally gifted and athletic fighter he's worked with and could have been brilliant, but that he was just impossible to train, a real nightmare. :witzend:

I think Hide could have been a serious long-term cruiser champ. Bob Foster, for all his power and ability, just couldn't handle the power of the big guys. (And that's just an example, not a comparison in ability!)

let's say hide had won, and kept winning. he might have got moved toward a tyson fight. can you imagine how badly herbie would have imploded vs tyson?

i'm pretty sure it was the jab that dropped him. vitali measured hide with the left, set up the right, but hide had already gone down from the left.
