boxing in places you least expect

Post by rhino222 »

just back from marrakesh in morocco, the famour j'emma al f'na square, very lively at night, all sorts going on, monkey trainers, dancers, snake charmers with cobras, story tellers, magicians, eateries..etc etc....., when i stumbled across maybe 100 people forming a ring sized oblong and some boxing taking place, seemed like a gypsey fairground type of thing, with a few decent scraps all for the pricely sum of 2 Dirhams !! (17p) ...

saw 4 fights, bare chested lads in jeans or trousers, equal ish weight, boxing gloves, and a ref who stopped the action when he wanted to collect money of any new comers to the crowd or when he wanted the crowd to cheer more.

quality stuff !!! .... :box:

Sounds like some good fun that place!

It's prob also a good way to keep the tension down and allow local lads a place to settle their differences without it getting escalated to worse means.

Isn't there a pub in Colchester or somewhere, that they have a boxing ring upstairs and if any lads kick off in the pub, they drag them upstairs and throw then in the ring with big gloves on, let them slug it out until they get over it? Sounds like a great way to settle issues between drunken fools, better then getting guns and knives involved.

There was an article I read in Maxim or Esquire or something similar around 10 years ago about this back street boxing bouts - they are all over Morroco and apparently - there are some really tasty fighters amongst them. :box: The lads are usually teenagers though.

I have never been there - but Mongolia is the place where one armed boxing takes place and they like to biff over anyone who looks like a Russian! :bag: Goes to show what hard bastards Choi Tssepurev and Shinny Bayaar are - I am proud Shinny is flyweight champion of our country. :TU:

Went to tent boxing in the outback of Australia, local lads taking on the boxers, not much quality. But quite amusing when pissed up lads think they can take the big heavy, he lets them blow out quick before stopping them.
