Certain nicknames which were once wildly popular are considered in bad taste today. Kid Chocolate, "The Cuban Bon Bon," is not one you hear bandied about, nor is William "Gorilla" Jones, and he was quite the character, allegedly the well-equipped man-toy of Mae West. Sam Langford is still mentioned a great deal, but "The Boston Tar Baby" nickname is often left out these days.

One thing to add, when historic nicknames too brazenly reflect the attitudes and prejudices of society we should not retro-police the past. By our standards it is unacceptable to call a dark, kinky-haired ballplayer named George Cuppy "Nig," but that was the name he played under a century past, it was a part of the game and of our history. It is better we wince knowedgeably at the excesses of the past than give future generations a false impression of that reality. I want to know how it was in the past, accurately, warts and all. White washing historical facts just makes people ignorant of who they really were and where they really came from. I have seen Kid Chocolate lanced out of feather and jr. lightweight discussions because people didn't want to deal with his name.

There are some special circumstances. No doubt soical attitudes forced Gershon Mendelhoff to call himself Ted "Kid" Lewis, but I am not in favor of retro-fitting Mendelhoff into his record book. Also, Young Corbett III is a nickname that doesn't even makes sense. It was given to him because some guy didn't like Ralph Giordano.

I do not believe the tar baby nickname to have been so much racial slur as it was a compliment to Langfords ability.Ofcourse it was convenient that Langford was black(as is tar) .
And i also feel that in modern society we have become overly sensitive when it comes to things like this.

When it comes to Ted ''Kid'' Lewis I think it was more about selling tickets and having a name people could pronounce correctly and remember. in that regard i dont think Gershon Mendelhoff would have done the same trick.

However, the best era for nicknames was back in the eighties/nineties, amongst minor heavyweight champions/fringe contenders. James "Bonecrusher" Smith. Donovan "Razor" Ruddock, James "Quick" Tillis. Mitch "Blood" Green, Renaldo "Mr" Snipes (actually, wtf was Renaldo thinking there? Maybe a Sidney Poitier reference? I dunno), Mike "The Bounty" Hunter (which was hilarious, 'cos even though when read out Bounty Hunter sounds cool, his actual nickname was just "The Bounty", so it looked like he was named after a chocolate bar).

Oh, & Jerry "Wimpy" Halstead, natch.
