2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
Re: 2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
What's up TerrenceJ............Just got back from Chicago VS Canada. Wynten beat the Canadian. Standing 8 count in the 2nd, had to switch up and go southpaw. He jammed his right wrist in the Indiana USAs. He fought on it tonite, but he should have passed on this fight and rested his wrist for the regionals.

Without rosters, it is hard to say. Some guys don't even enter the tournaments b/c of illness, work, school, injuries, turning pro, etc. Others do get defeated in local or regional tourneys. It is hard to keep track of who has turned pro too, especially when they do so without a lot of fanfare. I see that Luis Rosa is now 2-0. He was strong and I would have liked to see him at the U.S. Chp this year. Too bad.

Tramaine Williams can beat everything in 114
Re: 2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
108 Donald Smith or Cartenega
114 Warren or Lopez
123 Magdaleno or James Smith
132 Allen Jr. or Raynell
141 Gary Allen or Zeddie
152 Spence or Fox
165 Terrell or Arias (Will Jesse Hart be competing?)
178 Brant or Brown (I heard at the NGG that Rahman Jr. would be in Colorado at 178, thats a good pick)
201 Shimmell or Geffard (PAL Champ Samuels has a good style for the ESS also)
201+ Hunter or Thompson
There are several fighters in each weight class that could pull out the win. I'm sure picks will change once brackets are drawn and all of that.

Re: 2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
108- Byrd is unstoppable in the usa in my opinion. He took 2 national junior olympic titles, 3 national golden gloves titles, and 2 u.s championships titles. He hasnt been beat in the usa since 2007 national jgg finals, and looks sharper everytime you see him.
114- Tough weight class. You got Raushee Warren (2-time olympian), antonio russell (10 golden gloves finalist losing to Warren), Diego Hurtado (08 olympic trials participant), Adam Lopez (Under-19 national champion, youth world bronze medalist, national pal champion with beating diego hurtado in the tournament 10-1), and stephon young (tough top rated amatuer through out the years). Most likely Warren is the favorite but any of these other names are also a big part that can take it.
123- Jessie Magdaleno with his impressive upset over Warren on the tie-breaker and then went on to win the finals the next night. Magdaleno also had a good showing the the world championships with winning 2 bouts, and with young age is gonna keep on improving. Garza is a tough competitor with a stoppage win over williams last year in the regionals tournament and has been a tough amatuer through out the last years. hopefully we can see these to battle it out. i will take magdaleno though in a close one.
132- raynell williams is coming off a little of a bad year but is still very talented and seems might be back on track. he looked very sharp in olympics with winning a bout. so if hes back on track in my opinion he will be the favorite in this weight. Xavier Montelongo is a tough boxer with having a great junior year in 08 and a decent start so far in the open with a bronze medal at the u-19. but again i will take williams in this one.
141- Allan Russell took the national golden gloves title and i believe he should take the us championships this time as well.
152- Errol Spence lost a close 3-2 decision in finals at national golden gloves to grayton, but can easily turn it back around. grayton himself could play a big part as well obviously. or just as many believe the young alantez fox is a very talented fighter who could take it. so this one will be a tough one to.
165- gausha won last years us championships and the gloves with a questionable win over the young ballard and a very close 3-2 decision over arias in the quarters. any 3 of them will play a big part
178- brandt is looking good with now a u-19 national title, last years us championships and the gloves. hes looking very sharp and is still very young. the young browne looks preetyt talented to and could play a part to even after suffering a lose to brandt in the gloves.
201- you got geffard the gloves winner, temple a tough youngster with making it to the finals of the pal, and the quarters of the gloves. you got the young rahman who seems to keep improving. jeckabson with losing a a questionable lose to shimmel in last years us championships, and getting a bronze at this years gloves as well. charles with winning bronze at last years gloves, pal and us championships, with winning ringside worlds. and you got shimmell with winning 09 gloves and us championships and making it finals again this years gloves. he seems to always be in close decisions and even sometimes questionable desicions but always pulls through which is what matters. so all these names are a big part in the game.
201+ - even though he lost in finals at gloves a close decision i believ he will take the us championships. if hunter makes an appearance back it will be interested to see him and thompson in finals. hunter had a very close 8-7 win over thompson with the winning points accuring in like the last 2 seconds. so a very close win to hunter. so hopefully we can see another battle betweens these two at this years us championships, and the winner out of them two in my opinion will be the winner of this years us championships.

Some boxers may not box in the weight classes listed so yes we need to see the rosters before making picks.

No its just I like that you gave your opinion early. That means alot.
I did also and your is different than mine. There is no hard feelings. We all love the sport thats all. I know the team list isnt out but we putting it out early. I wish everyone would step up. Everybody is so politically correct and all that garbage. We can all have different picks and still enjoy each others list. I know it dont mean anything since it all gets settled in July. I agree we all think each others list is off a little.
I will repost my picks on July 18th. Those will be my correct picks.

Re: 2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
Jm05 is right..these are our opinion
s so we can voice them anytime we want I'm tired of people thinking that they can call shots in this forum. We all know its clear that the rosters will change..but guess what?? SO WHAT! who cares its just our picks as of now, for the sole purpose of discussion. I'm not these guys WILL win, and to be honest I'd rather see some unknowns win, but I feel these guys we are naming are standouts. It defeats the purpose of the group when you have people come in and try and regulate what others say. I feel like as long as no one is being nasty and disrespectful it shouldn't be a problem.

I agree. At this point no one knows who the Champions will be. If you give your picks then cool. Stand by them. We all have opinions. Thats all they are at this moment. The picks are just for us to have fun
.
Re: 2010 U.S. Championships - Early Picks to take the tournament
I don't know why everyone is getting so defensive. Go ahead and list your picks. It is what makes this forum fun. I like seeing what others think. I may not agree, but it is still fun. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I like rankings for the same reason, just to get dialogue going about amateur boxing. We need more of it.

I heard Wynten may not fight in the Regionals. Heard he may have a fractured wrist. He should have had it checked out after the Indiana USAs, but he wanted to fight that Canadian. I'll know more tomorrow.
Watch for a kid out of Gary, Indiana at 178.....Wynten Ellis. Has Tyson type power and knows how to use it. All his loses are hometown decisions, cause either the opponant runs or holds on and try to run. You can't do that and pitty pat in the Nationals. You have to bring it, and this kid can bring it.
