Kevin Mitchell - I didnt have any clothes ........???

Post by FLINT ISLAND »

Micthell was in the SUN newpaper today quoted as saying reasons why he lost.

He said that he didnt have any clothes, etc - as one of the reasons he had such a bad preparation.

What on earth was he talking about ?

Its a strange reason to state for a poor performance.

I'd say it was hugely disuptive to have your relationship come to an end and be excluded from your home without so much as your clothes to stand up in.
However, perhaps there should be less emphasis on the reasons why Kevin thought he lost and more attention paid to how good Katsidis is

Mentally Mitchell may have not been prepared, but I cant help feel the British media and most fight British fight fans got caught up in the usual FW spin and hype and actually believed Mitchell might pull it off, despite his average/below average resume.

A fit, 100% focused Mitchell would have a tough time with Katsides at any point in his career, let alone with personal disruptions.

Katsides is smply stronger, fitter and more powerful than Mitchell. Congratulations should go to him, no excuses.

Agree with you. Only have to look at the fighters each had fought.

Mitchell could've been 150% prepared for last Saturdays fight and he'd still have lost IMO

Katsidis was always going to test Mitchell's chin at some point. He decked Casamayor,a far superior boxer than Mitchell. All the preperation in the world wasnt going to keep him off him for twelve rounds. The Prescott win went to their heads a bit too much.Anywhere else in the world and Katsidis would have been a 1/3 shot.

what's that? stood in a ring with Michael Katsidis??

I wanted Kev to win, was quite gutted on Saturday night. I saw Katsidis on Youtube training the following day and he looked fresher than I'd have expected. He looked tip-top!......I suppose we associate Katsidis with "wars" but in reality, most of the power punching is being absorbed by the other fella to a lesser extent him.

I'd have liked to have seen Mitchell try to pick his pocket in a style that Khan uses. I think Mitchell's strategy, whether nerves or what, to stand on the spot on the ropes and try to duck bombs was his undoing, IMO Mitchell should have been a blur of motion that night, picking off what he could and getting the f*ck out of the way, use the whole ring, every square inch if necessary..........that would be extremely hard to do on 5 weeks training. He needs to try to learn from this experience and bounce back stronger. He strikes me as having an attitude to do that.

I must admit that i bought into the hype that mitchell would win,but after watching the fight realised that mitchell just wasn't strong enough,he is a small lightweight and i think he made the jump from super feather to chase big names and came unstuck,i overestimated mitchell and underestimated katsidis, but i suppose their records say all that needs to be said, the biggest name on mitchells record is prescott.

Remember after the Mayweather loss Hatton made excuses blaming it on Cortez. After the Kessler defeat Froch blamed it on the judges.
Boxing is a sport where you need supreme self confidence. Look how far Maccarinelli fell after Haye shattered his confidence. If I'm honest I don't think Mitchell will never be world level but where would the motivation be for Mitchell if he knew he could never reach the top.

" Mitchell is young, he will come again at world level "

Sorry but will he bollocks.

I like the guy, but this was a purchased fight and was it was a total mismatch.

We aint got a 135lb fighter in the uk who would beat him as he's rock hard.

Our best prospect is Alex Dilmagahni and he's a good 3 years off challenging for titles yet.

he's been thrown in deep waters and - like jennings, vs cotto - he seems to be bemused why this could happen to him so easily.

I still can't believe the bookies bought into the Mitchell hype aswell! Made me very happy. :OhYes:

I can believe it.

Bookies get boxing wrong alot of the time.

Like Kelly Pavlik was odds on to beat Hopkins with Ladbrokes

And Hopkins was 10/3 to win with Ladbrokes

I lost my bet - because I put money on Hopkins to win by stoppage at 9/1

But the point is - if you know boxing - you can easily get one over the bookies - they just go with the hype.

My favourite was Mosely at 1/4 to beat Winky Wright.I backed Winky heavily :D

I'm guilty too. Really thought Mitchell was the goods and totally disregarded what I have seen of Katsidis in the past.

Katsidis looked massive compared to Mitchell and was simply too strong and relentless. Even if the excses are true it wouldn't have changed a thing. MK would have got to him sooner or later.

Maybe Mitchell should drop back down to super feather.

Katsidis is an absolute beast, he'd have a good chance with any Light weight or even L/Welter IMO. Cracking fighter hope he gets some Major fights in the future.

Kevin Mitchell is a good fighter but I don't think it was just a bad training camp that lost him the fight, I reckon it was also genetics.

Are you sure? He got outclassed by Diaz who has a suspect defence, and belted by Casamayor who was on the way out. In reality Katsidis is a level below Diaz, Marquez and company. The Aussie is very good but he's not an ATG and he beat Kevin easier then he beat Graham Earl.

I'm a Kevin Mitchell fan, he's one of my favourite fighters but I would imagine before too long we'll be reading articles in the sun claiming Kats was an ATG

Mitchells hands were too low, you can't rely on head movement against such a short and active puncher as katsidis. Against a tall, over hyped 'future ATG' like Bredis Prescott then ok you'll be able to razzle dazzle but it just doesn't happen at world class.

Mitchell has always reminded me of Gatti and this is clearly the style he seemed to be trying to replicate but you watch Gatti at anything below top class and he always looked like a p4p such was his power and under valued boxing skills. Mitchell undoubtably can box but had not shown anything world class.

In hindsight mitchell would have been better served developing his career as a very exciting domestic performer then perhaps he could have moved into world class on the back of some near world class performances. Beating a south american journeyman and a amir khan fall guy was no preperation.

Ultimately its difficult to apportion blame to anyone. I think once again the way in which boxing is poromoted in the UK needs to be looked at. I think there is no shame in being a consistent and capable British champion-willing to take oin all comers and I hope that this is the route FW chooses for Kevin now. No-one puts on a show quite like Warren and though sometimes they seem like a marathon +1 to the win column carnival he does have the best stable of fighters in the country. Just wish he would take interest in domestic boxing again.

It seems a long time since he was making relevant domestic matches. Perhaps the monies not there I don't know- but that was pretty shocking on saturday-.

What do people think of Cleverly's rise then?He has had an easier route to an "interim" than Mitchell, got FW behind him,and could make up as many excuses as he likes because of his degree.Should the breaks be applied?

Cleverly beaten the best domestic opposition moved op one euro. He should defend that a few times. Mitchell was pushed sooner
