Speaking of Graham Earl - I noticed on youtube in the comments section of the Khan fight somebody posted that they used to be a big fan of Earl until they found out he was a proud supporter of the BNP. Any truth in this or just the usual youtube garbage?Counter-puncher wrote:about 1/4 of the chin of Graham Earl and maybe 1/2 Earl's punch.
Is tougher matchmaking required for our upcoming boxers?

Put simply, at some point the good British boxers need to fight each other. Too many international opponents being brought in from "debut" onwards.
There was a good match up last year - Denton Vassell V Eddie Corchoran (who hasn't fought sinse) these fights should happen a lot- but in fact they are very rare.
Novices (guys with 3-5 wins) should fight other novices at the same level. Its a good way to learn, and it makes for an entertaining fight.
Novice v Buckleystyle Journeyman is just boring.

i agree but yourself in the promotors shoes , you dont want your prospect getting beat , so you try to find them as good an opponent as possible but without risking them getting beaten , hence why foreigners are brought in , if a latvian with a 6-2 record was compared to a brit with the same record the brit would more often than not , be a damn sight better , but joe public may not be aware of this , so on paper its still an equally tough fight , but to us in the know , its a different matter.whicker wrote:Put simply, at some point the good British boxers need to fight each other. Yes, I always wanted to be matched tougher BUT I swear Dean Powell has a hard job and I mean the amount of work the guy does is crazy!! His phone just never stops and he's here, there and everywhere. Meetings, shows it's just non stop... Let's also not forget the word BUDGET plays a huge part in proffesional boxing!! This is one of the main reasons sometimes.

I hope that boxing evolves in the coming years and in my lifetime I genuinely hope there will be a single, universal governing body. If this happens the stupid records and silly matches will stop. It HAS to happen for boxings survival. A proper governing body would rid boxing of most of its cancers.
Mitchell was 31-0.... had he beaten Kats, which was not inconcievable he would have been just 15 matches short of Calzaghes 47-0. Is it really that difficult to imagine him negotiating 15 more routine matches with a couple of highly hyped 60-40's?
Would he have become another ATG just like some call Calzaghe?
Off topic, i read Calzaghe's book yesterday. Pretty good read and highly recommended. Have to say the guy deserves a great deal of credit. The same things that held him back from being a undisputed atg led to him reaching 47-0 against largely creditable opposition. I've always been one to critisise Calzaghe and having read that I realise i've been pretty unfair. What a fabulous career. I really like the way he came across.
