Lou Duva
Re: Lou Duva
Watching Gary Shaw at the Super 6 negotiating table reminds me of Lou Duva in a boxing corner.
Talk about spirit.![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

Re: Lou Duva
Mickey Duff labelled Duva "a licenced squealor", which was quite funny. Duva could lose control of himself and that is unprofessional.
Re: Lou Duva
Hector Camacho said it best when he refered to Duva and Kevin Rooney as Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble.
Re: Lou Duva
I remember Lou getting dropped by Roger Mayweather.
It was during the Vinny Paz-Mayweather brawl.Lou charged Roger after the fight and got belted.
Dont whistle unless you wanna take the cab.

Re: Lou Duva
Yep, but he's fearless. Not bright in every category, but definately fearless. lol
Re: Lou Duva
Yes I did often wonder why Lou Duva would always make such a fuss and initiate what we call in the uk "handbags" type situations.
Roger Mayweather dropped him and he took a terrific pummeling during the Golota-Bowe incident.
One could argue Lou had terrific heart and courage to put himself in those situations in the first place at his age ostensibly defending his fighter, but it did seem to me he was all bark and no bite.
Than again he was very old by that time and i read he had been a pretty good fighter during the war.
Irrespective Duva is a brave man and a good boxing trainer. My only criticism is he did have a habit of telling fighters to retire early!
He told Vinnie Pazienza to retire at 27.
He left Mike Mccallum after his first loss and Mark Breland and Tyrell Biggs and Meldrick Taylor were ditched relatively early too
He told Evander to retire in 1992!!!!!!!!
Still Lou is a legend

Re: Lou Duva
I've always thought Duva was a poor trainer . . his between round counsel/advice was always atrocious.
"Use your jab use your jab, fight this guy!" while screaming into his fighter's face.

Post script Edit
Lou Duva was always a cantankerous foul mouthed man.
I just watched the Larry Holmes-Holyfield fight and any one who can make Holmes seem jovial and reasonable must be seriously cantankerous.
Larrys crime was being a little slow to get out of the corner at rounds end which happened to be where Lou Duva was stationed in preparation for Holyfield. Larry playfully smiled at Duva and put his glove playfully on his head. His reward Duva told him to "fornicate" off in no uncertain terms and looked as if he wanted to attack Larry............like i say anyone who can make Larry Holmes look reasonable and playful must be a seriously unreasonable man.

Re: Lou Duva
Not that I disagree with the idea Duva was twitchy, but is this really the best example to illustrate a point? Holmes clearly belittled him...what was unreasonable about telling him to get fvcked?mugabi wrote:Post script Edit

Re: Lou Duva
My viewpoint was Holmes was very gee jolly and smiling at this stage of his comeback as if trying to take a leaf out of Foremans book, and that he tried to joke with Duva and Duva kicked off wearing on tv like he used to......still again you might have a point since Holmes was so known for patronising people maybe Lou thought he was doing so to him? Anyway its all moot.

Re: Lou Duva
In the late 80's. When McCallum suffered his first defeat to Sumbu Kalambay, Duva nodded his head as Kalambay got the decision over his man Mccallum.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:When did Duva train McCallum? Never heard that before.
Mccallum didnt use Lou again.
