Ulrich vs Barney

Post by stujones »

The thread on this has gone down abit, so I thought I would create a new one.

Is this on via the web or is it only available in the UK via the porn dishes.

Is it likely to be Eurosport at any time.

Go on Matthew, good luck. Huge opportunity for him.

I went for Ulrich on points in the Prediction League but I would love for Barney to do it as not many things have fallen right for him. But I just cant see him with the style he has getting a decision over there

Just watching it now.......German TV has a very low opinion of Barney - they keep calling him 'Der Stinker'. Bit harsh, even if I didn't enjoy his bout against Tony Oakey.

Anyway, Barney started off OK, but Ulrich looks about a stone heavier and came into it more in the 2nd and 3rd. Barney doesn't look like he's got the power to keep Ulrich off, even if he boxes nicely. Can't really see Barney getting anything here....

Close fight after 10 rounds, Barney could win it with a good finish.

Unlucky for Barney but it looks likes he put up a really good display although I cant see "Der Stinker" gaining a following over there

The commentator said that barney could win the 10k backward run if such an event existed.
Oh yeah, Barney thought that he got robbed and Ulrich said that it was a great fight.....

Might not be the right words but a good effort from Barney, I expected him to last the distance but didn't expect it to be that close.

It must have been odd hearing the German commentators slagging him off, I actually thought that they would have appreciated his style. Sounds like good scoring aswell generally.

Hope Barney can get another crack.

Turned out to be a strange fight I thought......Barney spent 12 rounds circling the outside of the ring jabbing and rarely clinching or throwing a right. Ulrich spent 12 rounds in the centre of the ring failing to cut Barney's movement off. Barney's jab was very effective and he closed Ulrich's right eye with it. After 3 rounds I thought Ulrich would cut Barney off and win easily on points....

The rounds where Barney jabbed a lot he won. Trouble is, in 5 or 6 of the rounds he barely threw a punch but made Ulrich miss him. How do you score a round like that?

Barney thought he'd got it, and said afterwards in an interview on German TV that he thought he was well ahead going into the 12th so took it easy. German TV zoomed into the scorecards whilst they were being added up (nice touch...kills the suspense!!) and it was clear that Barney would have got a majority draw had he taken the 12th!

German TV were also uncertain if Ulrich had done enough to win at the end of the fight (I think - my German isn't that good).

All this said, I thought there were 5 or 6 rounds when Barney jabbed well and frequently and kept Ulrich off balance and away from him and desevered the round. However, like I say there were 5 or 6 rounds when Barney kept Ulrich away from him, made him miss but threw next to nothing. I took this as a sign of effective aggression (just!!) on Ulrich's part and gave Ulrich these rounds. I think I had it 115-114 Ulrich at the end.

Very frustrating for Barney. There were 2 or 3 rounds when if he'd just thrown something he'd have probably picked up thr rounds and won the fight (the scores were 115-114 twice and 116-112).

Trouble is can you go to someone's backyard and skip round the perimeter of the ring, make your opponent miss without being too aggressive yourself and expect to win?? I thought Barney was unlucky, but not robbed. Fair decision I thought.

Man, I didn't see it but this must be a measure of how bad Ulrich is, to win only a close decision over MATTHEW BARNEY?

Jeez. I also expected the german audience to appreciate barney, 'der stinker'?? hypocrites...

The fight was way more boring than anything that Ottke, Hoffmann and May have ever done.

I had the fight a draw, but i can understand people having Barney in front. For the first half of the fight, Barney was able to land his left consistently into Ulrichs face and Ulrich was never able to really catch the Brit, although Barney circled in the wrong direction, in the second half, Barney didn´t land his jab that often, especially in the last 4 rounds he did almost nothing than run. Ulrich did a bit better in those rounds, still most hitting air, only very few punches landing mostly at the body. It was one of the most boring fights i have ever seen, not only because of Barneys running style, but also because Ulrich seemed to be absolutely uninspired how to catch the Brit. After the fight Barney wanted a rematch, feeling that he had won the run. Ulrich was asked about it and answered, that it wouldn´t make sense to do a shit fight like that again. Because of the controversity i think a rematch would be advisable, but i agree with Ulrich, it doesn´t make sense to do it again, no one would want to see such a bore again. In comparison to Barney even Sven Ottke was exciting.

I wonder if barney thinks he's boring? I wonder if he ever thinks, during a fight, 'This is boring, I wish I had the balls to get stuck in'

Yep that is true, Charles Amdanu beat up Barney and showed really that he probably achieved his level when winning the British title. Perhaps though he is weight drained at Super Middle, because he did upset Oakey and he did nearly now upset Ulrich.

I would have predicted him to have done either based on his last two performances at the lower weight.

So what should Barny do now, even in loosing he has restored some credibility. Froch has called him out at super middle befor now that wouldn't be a bad fight for ether if they believe they could win, or is Barny more suted to light heavyweight? Thoughts any one.

Why not Barney vs Woods as an "celebratory" first defence for Woods. Kind of like I suggested Tony Oakey before. Woods will win and as Bunce said deserves an easy one. Why not Matthew.

Think he should stick at Light Heavy, more options and seems to fight better. Oboh aint getting any younger - he might fancy his chances of running his way to a victory there.

do you think loosing a european title challenge is really what it takes to deserve a world shot :S dont quite see many fans buying that one personaly Ulrich may be a similarly easy fight for woods with a bit more cudose.

True, the advantage that Barney has is that he is a brit and will generate (possibly) some support of his own.

I'm not saying it was a deserved title shot, but then did Botha deserve his title shot vs Lewis - which was seen as a celebratory defence.
