Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Kali has had seven fights fall through in the last two years.
Not many boxers like being pounded out in two or three rounds.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Yeah, by "more interesting", I didn't necessarily mean "better than", but I just think Haye v Meehan is a more exciting match than Haye v Chagaev. Two huge punchers, both aggressive, both vulnerable... that's a good combination!foxdog1923 wrote:Meehan being more of challenge to Haye then Chagaev?...yep I think so too but I'm not saying Meehan automatically is better then Chagaev, its a styles thing.oliverfennell wrote:Meehan's best hope really is that Chagaev is damaged goods coming off the Klitschko beating. Otherwise, on paper, it does look a big ask for your guy.
But saying that, I will be rooting for Kali. I'd say he doesn't deserve his ranking at present, but fair enough if he can beat Chagaev - and importantly, he makes for a much more interesting challenger to Haye than Chagaev would.
It would have been good to see Meehan take on a fairly decent opponent before this fight. One who can take him through 12 rounds im sure he gets plenty of high intensity sparring but sparring is sparring and fight's are just that. Kali's camp probably thought of this ages ago but couldnt find anyone to fight Kali.
Im going for Kali but Chageav is still a force in HW boxing.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Fights coming up soon and I'm more excited about this fight than I was for Haye-Ruiz, Klitschko-Chambers, and the upcoming Klitchko-Sosnowski.
This is a very competitive match, but I feel like both men may not be at their best. Chagaev with his health issues and the beating from Klitschko, and Meehan with his inactivity. I don't think this will prevent the bout from being exciting but it makes it harder to predict an outcome when you don't know which version of each fighter will turn up.
The main thing that Chagaev has in his favor is durability. He was able to take a lot of hard shots from Klitschko and has never been seriously hurt in his career, while Kali does not have the strongest chin around. On the other hand Kali has a significant size advantage (In the press conference pictures I thought Meehan looked to have more than four inches on Chagaev, he made him look tiny) and I feel he punches harder.
Very tough fight to predict but I'm narrowly leaning towards Chagaev. He is the home fighter, can take a better shot, and I feel he is also a little more skilled. I hope Meehan wins though, he deserves another big pay day after being treated poorly by the WBA.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
i don't know how u can question meehan's chin tbh. just watch the last round vs rahman. rahman hit meehan with more than 60 power shots and he still didn't go down, meehan's corner stopped the fight when the round was finished. there were some huge shots that he took. considering it took one shot to ko lennox lewis, his chin can't be that bad. nobody else took that punishment from rahman without being ko'd.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
I question Meehan's chin because he was stopped in thirty seconds by Williams, dropped by Okhello, and had some rocky moments in round five against Williamson. Chagaev punches as hard as all of these fighters.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
against williams he was just as much caught cold. i think he was overwhelmed by such a big shot so early. not to mention that it was probably the best punch williams has ever thrown. good example of always be prepared from when the 1st bell goes. haumono learnt that the hard way too.
the rocky moments u talk about vs williamson were more exhaustion than anything. he only had 7 days notice for this fight. his fitness was terrible.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Meehan 230 pounds, Chagaev 231 pounds.
Meehan lighter than Chagaev? Interesting. Meehan is around his usual weight, Chagaev is usually lighter than that.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Well the chin certainly wasn't Kali's problem........
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
How did it go down? I wasnt able to see the fight...
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Kali went the distance with him. That's about it.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Kali won the first round as Chagaev did nothing but it went downhill from there. Chagaev started to get going and it was clear by the fourth that Meehan was out of his depth. Chagaev would stalk Meehan and then trap him in corners and unload quick and hard combos. Kali was unable to keep Chagaev off as the Uzbek did a great job of blocking his punches and slipping in between them. Chagaev also was very accurate with counter punches and made Kali pay for missing.Tinnie wrote:How did it go down? I wasnt able to see the fight...
I had Chagaev winning 119-109.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
i was thinking and hoping that with the near misses and being screwed around for the past couple of years that Kali might have had some pent up aggression there somewhere but only going on the highlights, it seems he wasn't aggressive enough??
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
OK so that settles that. Hopefully, Kali made a decent purse from this and move on....
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
He was aggressive in spots but whenever he would really let his punches go Chagaev would block/evade them and catch Kali with hard counters. I think if he was more aggressive he probably would have just ended up getting caught more often. There were really no answers for him tonight.unleash06 wrote:i was thinking and hoping that with the near misses and being screwed around for the past couple of years that Kali might have had some pent up aggression there somewhere but only going on the highlights, it seems he wasn't aggressive enough??
I thought he looked slower than ever before and I don't think it was the best Meehan in there, which makes it very hard to beat a former world champion and top 5/6 fighter like Chagaev.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
You cant win a fight if your 40 and haven't fought in 2 years, Kali should come home and fight some local fighters.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
The way I see it Chagaev got the nod but both fighters weren't throwing any combinations and playing it too safe. To suggest that Chagaev is THE WHITE TYSON is ridicules David Tua would Knock him out.

Thx for the run down mate. Im a little disappointed but not surprised, still proud of Kali though it takes alot of guts to step up and get in the ring with a top ranked guy after being inactive for so long.
Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Boxrec rating three Australians ahead of him (including Wilson, knocked out enough times by Kali for Kali to own him) may get him hungry.Hounddawg wrote:You cant win a fight if your 40 and haven't fought in 2 years, Kali should come home and fight some local fighters.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
Kali has just gone the distance with a man who held a World Title recently. He could still make a living fighting American heavyweights, most of whom could not have done any better than he did this weekend.

meehan never had the firepower to trouble a top heavyweight
could be the end at his age but maybe a return with Okhello

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
boring fight with no real agression,(like tua vs ahunanya) survival seemed to be the answer, because of inactivity maybe, both looked outdated, chagaev for a former world champ didn't look 'the goods' david haye would be licking his chops.

Re: Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev
looked like meehan was trying not to go too hard just in case the fight went a long way. but simply never put his foot on the pedal. when he moved forward and threw some punches, he looked far more dangerous than chagaev, its just he hardly attempted it. if he can learn from this and execute the game-plan properly in his next fight then i think he has the ability to defeat chagaev, who most people put in the top 5 heavies atm.
