Doesn't seem interesting or obscure, but what in your opinions, is the greatest fight in the history of the sweet science?

Good list Tomato Can.
Do you really mean Ali-Frazier II? I haven't seen it but most people rate it as the worst of the three fights.
I agree with you on Larios-Vazquez.
I like Hearns-Leonard I. Its not an all action, but I liked the changing momentum and the fact that it was such a close matchup. First Hearns is the aggressor, then Leonard takes over and Hearns tries to box. Then Hearns gains control and looks like he will take a clear decision. But he couldn't hang on. Great fight.

I know with the Ward/Gatti fight still fresh in our minds it's hard to remember Gatti/Robinson I. That was 1998 FOTY. How about Gatti/Ruelas? 1997 FOTY. How about Gatti/Rodriguez? That was nice. I'm not a huge Gatti fan, but how much more entertaining can one guy make his fights? Oh yeah, how about Ward/Burton? Nice. Those are fights that I've seen with my own eyes. As for stuff that happen when I was an embryo or earlier, I agree with most people when they pick the "Thrilla in Manila" and Foreman/Lyle. <--Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots

Arch rivals Sam McVey and Joe Jeanette had a fight to the finish in France in 1909(or around that time). They fought until one man was out, to settle the rivalry once and for all.
McVey was dropped 11 times! He was stopped in the 42 round! Imagine that! But even more amazing is Joe had to get off the canvas 27 times himslef to stop McVey in the 42nd round!
I have never seen this fight, and doubt any one here has as it is extremely rare footage, but I have read up on it. Can't think of a fight that has that many knock downs or a guy who got off the canvas from 27 knock downs to win besides this fight.
Plus the fact both guys where so evenly matched. They had a long rivalry and the fight was set to the finish. That is pretty good hype for a build-up. Both guys had to go for the KO as there was not going to be a decision. Even still it took 42 rounds! But if your opponent is willing to get off the canvas 27 times and still comeback like these gladiators you have to expect that.

just browsing over the older sites again and wondering why Archie Moore-Yvon Durrelle first fight doesn't appear. Even if members don't go back that far it's been on classic boxing shows many times. As well as being a great fight, in terms of action, it is probably the most outstanding example of a great fighter coming back fom the edge of defeat on record. if you guys can check this out some way, do it. Moore's will to win, courage and use of psychology are a marvel to behold.

1. Bobby Chacon vs. Rafael "Bazooka" Limon IV
2. Ali vs. Frazier III
3. Hagler vs. Hearns
4. Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward I
5. Riddick Bowe vs. Andrew Golota II
6. Aaron Pryor vs. Alexis Arguello I
7. Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Meldrick Taylor I
8. Bobby Chacon vs. Cornelius Boza-Edwards II
Terrific fights that, for whatever reason, don't do it for me: Moore vs. Durelle, Holmes vs. Norton.
Classics that I haven't seen yet: Leonard vs. Duran I, Ali vs. Frazier I, the Zale-Graziano trilogy, the Patterson-Johannsen trilogy, the Zaragoza-Banke trilogy.

Inevitably, there is an emphasis on the modern day with many of these all-time lists, given how the the memory doesn't like to work too hard. No doubt, the Micky Ward-Arturo Gatti first fight was an all-timer. No doubt at all. Round nine was beautiful (even the arrogant Larry merchant was humbled). But Archie Moore-Yvon Durelle I has to be included in any all-time great fight list, as does George Foreman-Ron Lyle and Saad-Yaqui Lopez II. I think Fat City's list is superb. Pintor-Gomez is a forgotten classic. Another overlooked classic is Salvador Sanchez-Azumah Nelson from MSG in 1982. Two modern greats going at it. Nelson was unknown before the fight and the New York crowd couldn't believe his performance against the stone-faced, brilliant-boxing Sanchez.
