2012 London Olympic Qualification System Released

Can someone tell me if I understand this correctly: I get the WSB and AIBA World spots. . .not so much clear on the "America's" single continental qualifier. Is that Mexico 2011 Pan Ams? So if you are on the US Team, you have Pan-Ams, or top-ten finish at AIBA Worlds (top 6 for heavy and superheavy) or WSB Championship to qualify for Olympics.

2012 London
Men - 250 total spots: 237 (5 WSB spots, 92 at 2011 AIBA Worlds and 140 through continental qualifiers) , 8 Tripartite invites and 5 places for host country.

Women's - 36 total spots, 24 through continental qualifiers, 11 Tripartite and 1 host country place.

2008 Beijing - 286 total spots: 204 through continental qualifiers. 80 at Worlds (Chicago) and the other 2 Tripartite invites. "America's" had Worlds and 2 qualifying events I think.

I don't know if they will use the '11 Pan Am's as the one America's continental qualifier. They did for the '04 Olympics but did not for the '08 Olympics. AIBA keeps moving the goalline everytime they make an announcement.

JMac is correct, they haven't specified the America's Qualifier Event. It could be the Pan Ams, but it could also be a separate tournament just for Olympic qualifying.

Soooo - they're not going to make the WSB guys go through "our" qualifying process. It will be interesting to see how they do since they will have been out of the "amateur" loop for a while.

Exactly what I was thinking Mel. How does winning a tournament with smaller gloves, 5 rounds, no headgear, & 10 point must system qualify a boxer for fighting under traditional AIBA rules in the Olympics?

Isnt that sorta like giving the NFL super bowl champs a spot in the Rugby World Cup tournament?
