Re: George Groves next opponent?
Maybe Zuniga, he would cause Groves a few problems and would be a good test for him
Re: George Groves next opponent?
Is it just a fight to stay busy? It's not currently down on Boxrec as being a defence of his Commonwealth title, and it's only a couple of months away.
With that in mind, it's not going to be someone like Dilks. We'll be lucky if it's someone in the top 100.

i bet it will be somebody decent, maybe a top 30 world ranked fighter over 10 rounds.Asterix wrote:Is it just a fight to stay busy? It's not currently down on Boxrec as being a defence of his Commonwealth title, and it's only a couple of months away.

im guessing an African.... any african
Re: George Groves next opponent?
Well, with all the "named" fighters up against TBA it will be interesting which fighter will get the TV fight alongside the main event.
Casamayor, Mora (although isn't Macklin the rumoured opponent here) and Groves are scheduled to be on the bill.
If Golden Boy want Groves to get the TV fight, then I anticipate someone like this guy as his opponent.

Way, way past his best.

Re: George Groves next opponent?
I'd be amazed if they threw him in with Joppy, He is at the end BUT would be a risky fight..

Re: George Groves next opponent?
i think groves would win but i agree with you it is a risky fight, joppy is still a puncher, and if there's 1 slight weakness in groves game at the minute it's his defence.Bomber 1 wrote:I'd be amazed if they threw him in with Joppy, He is at the end BUT would be a risky fight..
Re: George Groves next opponent?
Joppy is completely washed up - he hasn't had a decent win since he barely got past Eastman nine years agoand despite the stats he's never been that big a puncher. Think Groves would win it comfortably personally.HomeOfBritishBoxing wrote:i think groves would win but i agree with you it is a risky fight, joppy is still a puncher, and if there's 1 slight weakness in groves game at the minute it's his defence.Bomber 1 wrote:I'd be amazed if they threw him in with Joppy, He is at the end BUT would be a risky fight..
Re: George Groves next opponent?
stupid to match a fighter on the premise his opponents shot.

if he aint shot the gulf in expieriance at this stage would be too much.joppy could school him & rob all his confidence before he is even built as a fighter.
joppy aint the same but still good enough to last 10 with bute.
Re: George Groves next opponent?
There's always that risk, but in this case it's marginal. Every promoter has to mitigate risk at some stage in a fighter's risk and I think Groves is good enough to rise to the challenge.hurlock wrote:Deserter wrote:in what sense is it stupid?hurlock wrote:stupid to match a fighter on the premise his opponents shot.

Joppy did last 10 against Bute but he lost every round. I think that even if in worst case scenario Joppy could put up a fight and actually beat Groves (which I find extremely unlikely), who's to say that wouldn't actually be of benefit to Groves? Not every loss leads to a loss of confidence, after all, we've said on here enough times that too much emphasis is put on preserving a fighter's 0 and that more can actually be learnt from a loss.
Re: George Groves next opponent?
When will Groves defend in london?
Re: George Groves next opponent?
but boxing is a buisness it's not the ufc.Deserter wrote:There's always that risk, but in this case it's marginal. i mean who has groves fought???. i rate him & believe he's got what it takes, but do your apprenticeship first :!:
Re: George Groves next opponent?
I don't understand your point - if the odds are in his favour in terms of beating Joppy, as I believe they are, he increases his market value considerably and it's a great 'rung' on the apprenticeship ladder, so it ticks both boxes.hurlock wrote:but boxing is a buisness it's not the ufc.Deserter wrote:There's always that risk, but in this case it's marginal. Business is all about calculated risk so I'm perfectly aware of what you're saying (though I think the UFC comparison is flawed given how successful a business model that is!).
I guess fundamentally you just have a different opinion of the risk/reward ratio in relation to the Joppy fight. I believe there's a lot to gain and little risk; you feel that there's far more risk due to Groves' lack of experience and a different view of Joppy's decline, which is fair enough

Re: George Groves next opponent?
He's already hammered Samuel and Adamu, and would do the same to Joppy IMO.hurlock wrote:but boxing is a buisness it's not the ufc.Deserter wrote:There's always that risk, but in this case it's marginal. That would be a superb CV for his age and at this stage in his career.
Re: George Groves next opponent?
In the latest BM it said that Groves was sparring Froch before the Kessler fight and that they were 'give and take' sessions that got quite intense. I'm suprised, and impressed that Groves would be able to compete at this stage of his career. I know it's only sparring but still.
Re: George Groves next opponent?
Jesse Brinkley would be a 100% win fight for Groves and a good scalp
Re: George Groves next opponent?
Groves is clearly a superb talent, but I wish they'd just take it a bit easier. Adamu was a big test and though he made it look easy, I'd still like to see him concentrate of cleaning up Britain first, which he can do.
