Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
Does anybody know of some amateur matchups or results that might surprise you? ie a journeyman pro today beating a world championwhen they were in the ams or matchups that seem strange because of the different weight classes they fight at now?
Off the top of my head
Chad Dawson vs Dmitriy Salita (Chad Won)
Joe Calzaghe vs Chris Byrd (Joe won)
Gerald McClellan vs RJJ (McClellan won)
Amir Khan vs Victor Ortiz (Amir won by stoppage)
Gerald McClellan vs Michael Moorer (McClellan won)

Isn't the Calzaghe one a myth.
Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
I remember there being a thread of some sort about it but can't remember what the conclusion was. I'll try to dig it out.DavidPayne wrote:Isn't the Calzaghe one a myth.

I have heard from a few sources its true its not like he was a massive bloke either when he was in his teens could have easily been campaigning at lmw in the ams
Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
Doesn't entirely clear it up but mroe than likely Calzaghe did beat Byrd in the amateurs at Middleweight.

Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
I know its plausible weight wise, but I think it was proven - by the fact neither fighter remembered it, and there being no evidence of the contest other than they were in similar weight class at similar time and the two nations met in a fixture?

Strange one. If both fighters were quoted as not remembering it, then it certainly seems like a myth.DavidPayne wrote:I know its plausible weight wise, but I think it was proven - by the fact neither fighter remembered it, and there being no evidence of the contest other than they were in similar weight class at similar time and the two nations met in a fixture?
Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
Fair enough i know McClellan Moorer occured and McClellan won which is a pretty impressive scalp considering that Moorer became the heavyweight champ and because of this Moorer wouldnt spar McClellan at the Kronk because of his power when they became pros
Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
JC stopped Byrd too, he also stopped Glenn Catley, Jason Matthews and Dean Francis

1992 Italy vs USA Middleweight (165lbs) dual meet in Italy (beat Chris Byrd)

I don't know if it's true but I can't see why not. Another source here: http://cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/calzaghe-joe.htm

Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
The Jennings one is the one that stands out for me.
He took the fight at 24 hours notice on an international and lost by 2 points. They were scheduled to square off again at the Olympia the same week but Alexander pulled out with sickness.
He's currently 3-0 at the moment and I'm certain he can obtain success in the pro ranks.
I spoke with Alan Lynch at this years ABA draw and he described Jennings as "never fulfilling his potential as an amateur."
I genuinely hope he fares better without the vest as the guy is an absolute gentleman.

Re: Interesting Amateur matchups/results?
Fair play only losing by 2 points did Paul Smith fight Dirrell and Pascal in the ams as well but lost to both
