Lucky was having a good day today. She was chowing down on some Carne Asada and Chicken. The weather was perfect today. With respect to our friends from the Midwest and beyond, you can't beat California weather, no way, no how!

Rick, that was one of our must stops on our Sundays Harley rides to Santa Barbara since the late '60's.

Its kind of hard to fined, its at the top of San Marcos Pass, on a little road on the left side as your are going north.

Well Frank and Randy, I finally had my first bowl of menudo con pata - and in Monett, Missouri of all places.

Here is how it happened: On Friday, Linda, my step-mother and I went to the Mexican restaurant here in town. They serve the traditional American restaurant Mexican food - stuff neither of you would probably put in your mouths. But it tastes pretty good to this Swede, its cheap, and the people are nice. So, we go there. The waitresses are all Chicanos or Mexican immigrants, and I've gotten to know one of them pretty well - a sweet girl named Mariella. When we were ordering, I joked that she didn't have menudo con pata on the new menu. She said, "Oh you can't get that here, Tom. But I know a place in town you can get it." Monett, you see, has a large Mexican immigrant population that works at the Tyson's and George's chicken processing plants in Monett and nearby Butterfield. Mariella then told me about a real Mexican resturant in Monett - "all us Mexicans eat there" - that has genuine Mexican food - including menudo con pata.

On Saturday at lunch time, I drove down to the restaurant and got my first bowl ("to go"), and Linda and I had menudo con pata right there on our kitchen table in Monett, Missouri. Now I'm a real member of "Classic American West Coast Boxing" thread, I guess.



Frank: Now you don't have any excuse not to come to Roaring River and go fishing with me. You can even get your menudo con pata right here in Monett!!

There are lots of Mexicans in Monett. And my Dad's hometown of Purdy, Missouri - which is near the processing plant in Butterfield - is probably 50% Mexican nowadays.

The Mexicans and Anglos in Barry County get along real well together, it seems to me. But I bet I'm the first Anglo who ever ordered menudo at that restaurant:

"I'd like two orders of menudo to go, please."

"Menudo?"

"Yes."

"Menudo?"

"Yes, please."

"Menudo . . really?"

"Yes, please . . ."

"Well, Okay . . ."

Once they got over the shock of an Anglo coming into the restaurant and ordering menudo, they were very nice. I plan to go back next time we're in Monett.

"That's a pig's stomach. . ."

Was talking to Don Fraser about menudo one day, and he told me that he and one of his daughters like and eat menudo, but that his late wife and other daughters wouldn't touch it...

Linda is much more adventuresome with food than I am. When we were in Europe, she tried all the local fares, and ate a few things in Sweden that even I wouldn't touch. (Traditional Swedish fare is sometimes a bit gross for non-Swedes.)

Frank I go to a Taco shop near my house,they look identical to the ones in this picture, but I get the carne asada version instead, the name of the place is Viva El Taco, over here they call me senor Pablo.
