Norton relinquished Commonwealth title
Norton relinquished Commonwealth title
Claiming hand injury prevents him from keeping his appointment with Domenic Vea in Sydney on July 1.

Re: Norton relinquished Commonwealth title
The purse for the fight was apparently quite low and the aussies were paying out minimal in expenses, think I read they were only paying out for Norton + 1 to travel not sure
Re: Norton relinquished Commonwealth title

Re: Norton relinquished Commonwealth title
Message from Vea's manager Justin Clenshaw
It's been a long and tough battle but we've finally nailed having Dominic Vea challenge for the Commonwealth Title on July 1.
Started with approaches to Robert Norton in September 2009 - he declined all offers. Dom got instilled as 'mandatory' in October 2009 with the fight to occur by 30 June 2010. Fight went to purse bid in February and we won the right to host the fight. Norton indicated he wouldn't travel to Australia to fight and was going to relinquish the title. He was supposed to sign the contract within 10 days of the purse bid but stalled and stalled until Dom lost the split decision to McCracken. We applied to have Dom remain as mandatory in light of his pre-fight injury and the fact that a split decision loss shouldn't derail his ambitions to challenge for the Commonwealth Title. The Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) approved Dom to remain mandatory and asked that Norton sign a contract within 10 days to fight on 1 July. Norton missed the deadline to sign the contract so we asked that he be stripped of the title. We get an e-mail (3 weeks ago) from his manager saying, I met with Norton last week and he agreed to the July 1 fight but has an injury. They produced a photo of an apparent broken hand. I responded that we won the right to host the Commonwealth Championship by way of the purse bid and Dominic has the right to challenge for it by way of being 'mandatory'. We asked that he be stripped. It went to a vote - we won it and Norton relinquished. They approved for Dom to fight any rated contender - they don't rank the contenders for the Commonwealth Title there is a list of 'suitable' challengers. Some are automatically 'out' because they're not looking backwards - eg, Herbie Hide, Troy Ross. Ammann and McCracken were engaged prior about the possibility of a fight with Dom for the vacant title but given the time that had elapsed, they signed for separate fights last week. We approached 2 Canadian guys in the ratings, they both declined. We contacted all other board members to seek any available opponent and the only reply was the Canadian CBC representative offering a fighter that wasn't in the ratings - Frank White 7-3-2. I also went to John Glozier in NZ and he suggested Mohamed Azzaoui. We went to the CBC with a preference for Azzoui (he's much more experienced and holds the WBO Africa Title) and they approved it last night.
The process has been an absolute nightmare but we're pleased that the Commonwealth Title will be contested downunder. As for Norton, they did allow him to hold on to being the mandatory so a fight with him, if he wants it, has to happen within 3 months of the title being contested.

true
i would have stayed in the heavies
Re: Norton relinquished Commonwealth title
It's good that the Australians seem to be taking this title seriously, anyway.
So many commonwealth match ups are really just a case of bringing an African to Britain to get the commonwealth belt round a prospects waist.
Shame it didn't happen- would have been nice to see a Commonwealth Champion travelling the commonwealth to defend his belt.
