James "Lights Out" Toney V Randy "The Natural" Coture
Ok I know this is not a boxing fight but a MMA fight.
But I think it is worthy of discusiion on these boards - as it involves maybe one of the highest profile boxer in the sport - a multi weight world champion - who is now crossing over to the MMA.
I dont know of any fighter on the level of James Toney who has tried his luck in MMA.
The only other World Champion boxers that comes to mind - believe it or not - who have talked about crossing over to MMA are.................Haye and Enzo.
David Haye was once talking about it and Enzo was seriously wanting to get a offer from Dana White the President of UFC to sign him up after his career went downhill in boxing - apparantly both Haye and Enzo have dabbled in MMA training with MMA fighters but have not crossed over to it.
But in August - James "Lights Out" Toney - the macho man - the loud mouth - but also a excellent boxing crafstman and a multi weight world champion will fight Randy Couture.
Couture who is currently in the worlds top 10 and is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Some say - Toney even though he is ageing can still KO Couture as a World Class fighter who will only be wearing 4 ounce gloves.
But others say if Couture gets him down - Toney will be humilated and owned and forced into submission or choked out.
What do you think will happen ?
And do you think it is a good or bad thing that a World Champion boxer is now in a way representing the boxing world in UFC ?

Bad thing if he loses, good thing if he wins. But not good if it encourages other talent to migrate.
Admittedly Toney is 58 years old but....

Toney better knock him out or he'll just get wrassled into submission, but then again, Toney's a strong, hard man and might be good at it and he was one of the best up-close fighters in history IMHO.
Way I see it though, It's a different sport entirely, same way I've seen kickboxers step into a boxing ring with a boxer and get hammered as their skills with their hands are just not at the same level.

Sad and bizarre.
However, if anyone spots any links to Toney trash talking about this nonsense, please post them on here as he's one of my fave bullshi**ers. :P

Apparantly Toney after this fight intends to switch back to boxing and hopes to fight one of the Klitshcko "sisters" as he calls them - or - he said he is prepared to come to England / Wembley stadium to fight David Haye.

james toney will get dominated :!:
one of my fav boxers but shoulder rolling etc gives your back away & toney will get embarassed :!:.james toney has lazy relaxed skills & that wont work in the octagon.
he's too fat to fight at the l.heavy limit who are still huge so randy being a relatively small heavy is the answer, but randy is as tough as old boots & could possibly carve out a career as a durable journeyman, his dirty boxing aint bad :!:
dirty boxing is basically in the clinch fighting which a boxing ref wouldnt allow people
toney is in for a shock :!: or maybe he wants to make a quick buck???

If Randy keeps this on the feet then he'll get knocked out BUT I think he'll constantly take James down but you might all be surprised as James does have some wrestling background as he was a very good wrestler while at school?? I'll stick to this though, He hits Randy and it's lights out.. Either way I feel this is not a good move for the boxing world especially i James get's blown away in like the first round.. :(
Re: James "Lights Out" Toney V Randy "The Natural" Coture

yeah i read toney was very good at college football. im not familiar with positions of american football but no most of them pick you up & slam better then most.
toney aint a big puncher at heavy either to be honest, he normally draws in opponents & tires them out before a culmination of punches.

LeTissier is another example.
Apparently Alan Shearer would have been a good boxer as well. Apparently ppl are shit scared of him when he goes off on one. My mate played against Shearer in a charity match and said he is one intimidating bloke...wouldnt think would you with his calmness on MOTD

On the subject of footballers & boxing. Have a look at Wayne Rooney when he was about 18/19 doing an EA Sports ad

He hits the bag like most of did when we were 5 years old. All rage, No stance, No defence etc etc. I know it was only an ad but if Rooney did choose Boxing over Football i reckon he would been one of those fighters who just would have been out-thought and outclassed by a decent boxer. He seems like all brawn and no brains to me
Re: James "Lights Out" Toney V Randy "The Natural" Coture
Did he not box in his youth? He must have picked up some skills. He has is also a natural athlete.

Without even watching him throw a punch, I would bet any amount of money that somebody like Julian Dicks (for example - and when he was a bit younger) could have turned pro as a boxer and faired pretty well with less than a year's training. Some people may scoff at that, but he is an amazing natural sportsman; great hand eye coordination, and control of his body. he can turn his hand to anything (sportswise) and look like he's done the sport for sometime almost instantly. LeTissier is another example. Toney is a similar type of guy.
i know what exactly what your saying macho man but sportsman are sportsman & fighters are fighters. you've seen yourself like barrera v morales it all goes out the window & becomes life or death, no sportsman apart from boxers expieriance that & dicks had a weak looking chin
most boxers ive known have been terrible at other sports

The Natural is going to put Toney's lights out! Trust me this fight will end with a rear naked choke in Randy's favour.

Toney is only going to have 4 ounce gloves on in the Octagon so will be punching harder than usual.

ofcouse he is flint there aint much cushioning abit like street fighting, you cant be taking shots & everyone hurts
DD
couture is old but still effective & not slurring like toney who's shown an amazing chin to tough it out v peters twice & rahman, really amazing how he can go into the trenches with such big & hurtfull punchers. he desrves more plaudits as he aint no heavyweight really.

Yeah, either Wayne Rooney or his brother boxed (maybe even both). I can't remember which.carlbcfc wrote:Did he not box in his youth? He must have picked up some skills. He has is also a natural athlete.

Yeah Rooney dabbled in boxing - but it was obvious football was his talent.Asterix wrote:Yeah, either Wayne Rooney or his brother boxed (maybe even both). I can't remember which.carlbcfc wrote:Did he not box in his youth? He must have picked up some skills. He has is also a natural athlete.
It is Rooneys Dad - who was a proper full - amateur boxer and I think also trains boys at a gym in croxeth Liverpool.
Rooney also was good mates with Ricky Hatton and was at one of his training camps at ringside watching him on the pads out in one of Hattons American fights.
Rooney is also mates with Iron Mike Tyson ...............
