Amateur to Pro Transition

Post by steve689 »

Hi Guys, it's been a while since I was last around here but I was wondering if any of you good folk would be able to assist me.

I'm writing a piece on the amateur to professional transition and was hoping for some comment, feedback or any links you might have on the subject.

With the stylistic differences between the two sports (i.e. amateur boxing being described as fencing by some people I've already asked) right down to the change in training, nutrition, adjusting to the professional training regimes and boxing full-time.

Has anyone tried pro boxing and gone back to amateur? Are the two sports so different? How did you adapt to the new rules and regulations? How long did it take you shed those amateur traits?

Any comment or debate on this subject would be extremely welcomed.

Thanks  Steve

Well, you can't go professional and then go back to fighting amateur. They're different, for sure. One is scored purely on punches landed, the other by judges based on pro scoring rules.

I'm not pro, but I've seen some really good amateurs never adapt, some who had a "pro style" to begin with, and others who take a few fights to get comfortable with the different rules. It's all a matter of the individual.

Not according to USAB rule 101.9: Professional boxers are prohibited from competing in amateur boxing.
