Tony Oakey
Tony Oakey
A fairly recent result that seemed to go relatively unnoticed was Tony's defeat for the British Masters title back in May.
Michael Banbula is one of these fighters who are better than their record suggest, and gives it a good go. But surely this means the end of the road for the crowd pleasing Oakey.
I actually thought he could come back from the MacIntosh set back. The miss timed count and everything, but to lose on points surely signals he's on the slide (big time).
Its a shame cause he looked impressive in the Prizefighter, and seeing how some of those Prizefighters have progressed - Dilks should be a Commonwealth champion, Stubbs hasn't lost since, Bob Ajisafe beat Orvil McKenzie - it is perhaps surprising that it is Oakey whose career has gone backwards.
Ajisafe now has a Commonwealth title fight vs Bellew, I was wondering when will Stubbs get a shot at some title.

as a boxing fan, i think oakey overachieved, 'jab jab straight right and a good chin' was enough to take him all the way to commenwealth and WBU title and prizefighter champ.

Re: Tony Oakey
I always found him to be a friendly approachable guy as well
Re: Tony Oakey
he is a lovely friendly bloke, yes he had guts, but i still say he was very limited. he just did what he did...but did it well.
Re: Tony Oakey
Tony Oakey is a legend in british boxing.. His wars were brilliant and his boxing skills and knowledge were very underated imo... I for one will truly miss his fights.. The guy was a fierce competitor and done great to compete with the larger men at light heavyweight.. I'd have loved to have seen a prime Oakey Vs Woods.. That would have been a classic fight..
Enjoy the rest of your Days Tony you have fully earned your place in british boxing history..

Re: Tony Oakey
come on bomber, woods would have wiped the floor with oakey. at the end of the day tony struggled a bit at british level, woods was world level.
oakeys best wins were against peter haymer and steve spartacus !!
woods best wins were against crawford ashley, ole klemetsen, yawe davis, rico hoye, julio gonzalez and glen johnson !!!
a massive difference in class between the 2 !!
oakey is great at what he did, a good domestic battler, good engine, good chin, limited power and big kahunas.
but to mention him in the same breath as clinton woods, is, in my view..hideous !!

Re: Tony Oakey
Im not saying he'd beat him for 1 min mate but I know it would have been a brilliant fight that's all Im saying.. Woods was a brilliant fighter too but was far from unbeatable.. I think it would have been brilliant to watch, 2 fighters with great engines and neither huge punches and both with brilliant chins.. Come on fella it's got the makings of a classic..
imo

I'd be over the moon mate I really would but I'll stick to my words that him and Oakey would have been a brilliant fight.. Yes Woods fought at a far higher level but let's not forget Oakey had a granite chin and an engine that would have posed anyone problems.. Woods didn't have a style that would run away from a fight he had a style were he'd fight you so I don't see how anyone can say Woods Vs Oakey wouldn't be good to watch.. Like I said I do agree Woods boxed at a higher level but just going on styles it would & could have been a classic..imo that is..
