"Ireland's Paddy Barnes is through to the final of the 48kg light fly-weight at the European Boxing Championships in Moscow after a semi-final victory over Spain's José de la Nieve Linares.

Barnes is now guarenteed a silver medal at the very least after a convincing victory 6-3 over the Linares at the Ice Palace."

Donavan out - 8-2 against Selimov - no disgrave in that.

O'Neill next and I cant see him coming through. All hopes on another Irish finalist rest with Big Kenny!

So England have two (Yafai and Stalker) through Wales have one (Weaver) and Ireland have one (Barnes) through to the final tomorrow.

Ireland have two to go today O'Neill and Egan - are there any others left to fight?

Weaver is English, he's from Bournemouth - Selby was the Welsh one

We could just say there are 4 through from the UK!

Hey Ron, how come all these English kids are getting through to the Euro finals when we got nowhere in the Euros, traditionally - absolutely nowhere?

Careful Ron - you could open a whole can of worms with that UK fighters comment, given some of the sensitive souls on this board!!

John Lyon, who has won more ABA titles than any man alive or dead, used to get eliminated in the first stage.

Ha, mind you Barnes will be at the Commonwealth Games this year for Northern Ireland.

Shows what a bit of investment i amateur boxing can do. People can say what they like about Amir Khan, but it was his performance in Athens that got amateur boxing properly funded. That led to the performances at Beijing and this now.

Don't know if you're fishing for something else here bennie but the stock response will probably be about the investment and programme up in Sheffield. Surely that's got to have a positive effect?

Another factor might be the breaking up of the Soviet Bloc? This will surely have watered things down a bit? Hey, not denigrating what they've done at all - it's bloody fantastic!

the breaking down on the USSR has made it harder to succeed not easier in my opinion - instead having just one good guy from the USSR now there is 7 to contend with.

Egan lost 11-9
