Has Braithwaite F'd up?

Post by stujones »

Has Braithwaite (a big Cruiser) forgotton about the weight change. He has come in at 188 lbs, thats a full 12 lbs inside the limit.

Mormeck has come in at 198 lbs, which is his career heaviest and looks the part at the weight.

I have gone for Braithwaite because he is a slick boxer and I thought the new weight would help his frame out tremendously. Has he F'd up? It certainly looks like it.

I would love to see a video of this weigh in, his reaction to Mormeck's weight and him being allowed to fight must have been a sight.

lol he knows what he what he is doing, he fought at 188 too in his last fight. He probably think around 190 suits him the best.

Braithwaite always fights at around 188-190, in fact I dont think he has ever weighed much over 190, I know for sure he has certainly never scaled anywhere near 195. Also worth noting that Wayne actually turned pro as a Light Heavy.

Re stu, Braithwaite a slick boxer? BRAITHWAITE A SLICK BOXER????????????!!!

Braithwaite is NOT a slick boxer. Have I been watching the wrong Braithwaite?

Mormeck will win this. I'll even include the risky

'trust me'.

Braithwait says if he wins tonight he's moving up to HW, big step from 188 to 210-220, which IMO is around the weight he'd realistically need to hit to chalenge at HW

This means Braithwaite is in shape. Mormeck does a lot of weights as you can see by his physique. Also according to Steve Cunningham who was a sparring partner of Mormecks for his second fight with Virgil Hill (Steve got sacked by the way) said Mormeck doesn't do any road work. You gotta wonder about Mormeck, Old man Hill pushed him close last time and the last time I saw Hill he looked well past it in a fight against a comebacking Donnie Lalonde. I think Braithwaite if he doesn't get him out early will use his superior boxing skills to get a decision win.

Thompson came in a bit lighter against Haye also.

I dont really rate Mormeck and I fancy Braithwaite to take him out in in the middle rounds

Riddick, I did say that wrong. I agree, Braithwaite is no Floyd Mayweather or peak Roy Jones - but he is more slick than a 40 year old Virgil Hill, who very nearly beat Mormeck.

For the devision I would call him a slick boxer, its pretty dire. I think boxing wise he is as good as a Johnny Nelson and that is pretty slick for this devision.

Mormeck needed a knockdown to secure him a narrow second win over a shot Virgil Hill, has been inactive, and appears one-paced,

Braithwaite is crude and wild, but throws plenty of leather and his punches carry sting. I think a superior boxer, like James Toney, would expose Braithwaite though.

Mormeck might be able to do so tonight but I think Braithwaite's superior engine will see him home.

Well, it looks like the extra 12lb were enough to give Mormec the extra power to beat up his opponent and win a comfortable UD.

If the Cruiser limit has been raised to 200lb, there is no point in shortchanging yourself and coming in at 188lb. That is retrospect was a big mistake.
Now for the first time since Holyfield unified it, the Cruiser class has an undisputed champion. Maybe now the Cruiserweigt class will become more interesting.
With Jirov rejoining Cruiserweight, it may be interesting to see a Mormec vs Jirov clash. :TU:

This was one of those predictions you always feel totally comfortable with. The ones where the americans on the current scene are shooting their mouths off about the other guy, the 'puncher', who turns out to be not much of a puncher after all, and the understated better boxer quietly and in a businesslike fashion goes on to win convincingly and shut them all up...

a similar scenario (not in terms of the trash talk) was actually Woods/Hoye, I should have taken into account Hoye's inexperience and woods' determination when betting on that one.

Good call Riddick, got that one a bit wrong - as you said I would.

Do you think this win, and the manner of the win means that aged 40 Virgil Hill is still the 2nd best Cruiser in the World. He has fairly recently announced that he is no longer retired.

The weight difference was exaggerated. The weighed them again on the night of the fight and there was only 4lbs between them. Mormeck actually lost a pound from the weigh in and was 196lbs,

Mormeck was the boss from the second round onwards and the cards were extremely generous to Braithwaite, bordering on being ludicrous in the case of the judge who ruled 114-112.

My only criticism was that Mormeck should have finished the job when he floored Braithwaite in the seventh. He was all at sea and there was 1.20 remaining.

But the Frenchman, even boxing in retreat taking no chances in the final 3 rounds, still outboxed Braithwaite behind his jab. An excellent performance in an entertaining fight despite Mormeck's dominance.

That Mormeck was a fornicating juggernaught. Braithwaite was unloading bombs from the off, gassed nearing the midway stage, then let them go in spurts through to the end. Mormeck covered his head in his hands and walked through the fire - once the fire was gone Braithwaite looked very, very ordinary.

Both showed strong chins, but the most interesting thing about this match for me was how Mormeck showed that he can absorb that sort of punishment to body and head and still put on that type of effective pressure.

Big punches are the features of most of the cruiserweight prospects. What happens if you have a guy with a chin like this, who also has (not brilliant) but a very impressive and versatile array of punches. He let go some very classy combinations and counters last night. The appalling two point scorecard was just your average hometown judging. Unfortunately, I don't think he would need the judges to deal with the three top contenders in the UK.

Hobson would be forced to fight going back - and remember he didn't look all too impressive doing so against Bruce Scott, I think Mormeck is too refined a puncher for Mark at this stage (maybe forever). Haye and Enzo would both get stopped, in my view. Haye would be a massacre; I think Enzo would last the longest.

The only interesting UK fight for him would be against Nelson. It would be interesting to see how he copes with Nelson's running. Pity Johnny hasn't got the IBF or this one really would be for all the spoils.

Glad i did....

Interestingly, quite a few of the American press picked Mormeck to win.

Ive never really thought of Hobson as anything but a domestic level fighter really. Mormecks at the world level. I definately don't think Enzo would have a chance. Haye's different though, he got some real good natural talent and probably very good boxing skills if he needs to use them. Imo he would have stopped Thompson late had he boxed from the off instead of bombing away.

Mormecks a mound of muscle. Like a slightly bigger Dwight Qawi. He's got a huge 19" neck almost as big as Holyfields. Probably takes a great shot with it and looks intimidating.

Almost agree completely, the only niggle I still have is regarding Haye. I just couldn't get it out my head while watching Mormeck that this guy's style would just give Haye nightmares. I could picture him putting on the pressure and walking straight at Haye - through the firepower - and then letting go some of those classy, hard bunches of punches.

I can see two ways for Mormeck winning: 1) doing what Thompson did and make Haye gas (still a very viable option). 2) pressuring him till he breaks down. I can see one way for Haye to win: by doing what you (rightly) say he should have done against Thompson and box him in the centre of the ring. The problem with the Haye-win scenario is that Mormeck, unlike Carl, wouldn't be getting rocked by the punches while absorbing... but would be blocking/absorbing and maybe even goading Haye to land more, while walking forward and pushing Haye against the ropes... I fear how that hands down defence of Haye would fare in this sort of position. Another thing to worry about is that Mormeck was showing alarming boxing skills - dancing around and spitting an awesome left jab over and over in Braithwaite's face - in the closing rounds.

My own prediction if this fight were to happen would be Mormeck as early as 3, or as late as 6. It's annoying though, because, like you say, he does have talent. But many on here have said it before, and will say it again: David Haye is doing himself no favours with these blowouts. Until I see him fight at a controlled pace for half an hour I just can't go with him being competitive with guys of the calibre of Mormeck.

erm arent we comparing someone who has had 14 fights against someone who is a seasoned pro and been involved in numerous world title bouts in fact defending the wba title 4 times and had 33 fights.

of course at this stage he would beat haye, what a stupid comparison.

Haye is far from being the polished article he hasnt even finalised his own plan of attack for half the fights, to compare him to a 32 year old established world champ is unfair in my view at this stage of his career ppor bloke is only 24 and you are throwing him to the lions here.

Trouble is J, it's Haye who wants to take these big steps up without getting the neccesary experience. There's too much of a gulf between the patsies and the next level he's faced. It's no good facing the likes of Mock, and then taking on Thompson. Admittedly, I thought he would do Thompson, but with hindsight, Thompson had too much experience for him.

Haye's power will give him a chance, in theory, against anyone, but it's what happens after 3-4 rounds, and especially once Haye starts getting hit in return. All fighters look good when they are pounding their opponent, it's another matter entirely when they're under fire. A good fighter needs to be able to react to both. Thus far, Haye's only reaction to being hit and hurt, has been to stand and swing away wildly, he got away with it against Mock, but against Thompson, well, need I say more.
