To My Friends . . .
This thread sports some great boxing writers.
Last year, the WBHOF Banquet Program was transformed (thanks to a few posters on this thread) from an embarrassing, innaccurate, historically inncorrect rag, into a championship publication that reflects pride an honor.
Bios . . . For every inductee, there must be a biography. In the past, not-so-knowledgeable directors have taken the easy way out when writing these bios. They would go into the net, find somebody else's words and copy them. The result was plenty of facts and figures, but no life to the bio, no passion, nothing that motivated the reader to "feel" the greatness of the subject.
My answer to that is to use boxing writers (not today's version that write for Ring, etc.) to write the bios.
I know of no source for good boxing writers better than right here. So I told Mando Muniz I want to use boxing writers I know to write the WBHOF program bios this year. He gave me his blessing to do this, so I am now recruiting a few guys from this thread to write the bios. I'll write a couple for the guys I know best, and we have Scar who will write Bennie Briscoe, Randy will write Julio Cesar Chavez, John Bardelli will pen Tiger Jack Fox. I haven't yet chosen anybody for Mike Tyson, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Graham Houston, or Jimmy Montoya. If anybody believes they could write a good bio on any of these inductees, let me know and give it a shot. You will get a "written by" credit, which puts your name in this historic publication, along with a few others from this thread. The publication is archived annually at:
The United States Capitol Historical Society - Washington D.C.
Los angeles County Museum of Natural History - Los Angeles
Bancroft Library, University of California - Berkely

Congratulations, Brian, Dan & all the Chicago guys. Brian is with the Blackhawks tonight.
I call Dan Hanley about another matter, Dan tells me the news, and I hear sky rockets bursting in the background.
Have fun Chicago.
Great night it was.
I was in a suite with the owner and president doing security at the game in Philly .
Needless to say, they were besides themselves with joy when they won.
I have a picture of myself hoisting the cup at center ice after the game. If I can ever figure out how to post it I will throw it on.
Its surreal.

Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
Johnny Forbes needs to be in . . .
His name was put up this year for posthumous WBHOF induction. I focused elsewhere, didn't push Forbes. Next year, I will.
Looking at an old B&W pic, Forbes with Gil Cadilli, circa 1943, at the CYO Gym.
Johnny Forbes never made any money off the talent he created. Others would grab them from him, premade championship packages.
The more you know about Johnny Forbes, the more you realize his talent & skill as a developer of superior boxing talent.
Ray Luna would take Keeny Teran, Gig Rooney was one of many, including Doc Kearns, that managed the career of Gil Cadilli.
Forbes spent money caring for the boys he trained. He fed them, gave them great advice on living, and he taught them to box!
He was part of a great era, and he made some great contributions. A Hall of Famer, for sure.
There is a lot of great L.A. history covered in Gil Cadilli Jr.'s docu on his dad.
Next year, Frank.

Brian, that has to be the coolest picture. I gotta see it. On Friday I was at the Hyatt downtown for a meeting and by chance the Hawks were having a reception there after the parade. So at least I go a chance to see the Stanley Cup in all it's glory, although it was stancheoned off. I'll be fishing with Mike Gapski and his bro in a couple of weeks. I think he's bringing some of the players, so I'll have to grab some pics of my own.Expug wrote:Rick Farris wrote:Chicago Blackhawks win Stanley Cup!

I jumped in my car at Ohare airport and drove straight to the horse ranch in Michigan where my family was. We go there twice every summer.
Had I stuck around in town, I would have run into you at the Hyatt.I would have been there.
Gapski is a good guy.You guys will have a great time and if he brings any players along it will be a blast. All those guys are good people.

Hand on heart, Tom, I'm always quite pleased when we struggle. The pre-game hype here is pathetic, particularly when everyone says we are going to win the event.
