DAWS v WILLIAMS - July 9th Good scrap!

Post by GlobalBox »

This looks as if it could be a cracker to me. Williams will take an early lead and then presumably face a fightback from Daws, think Williams has a chance in this if the championship rounds are not a problem for him. Its going to get hot from halfway and I suppose its a case of seeing if he can hang in there with Daws from therein.

Williams close decision for me, any views?

Should be absoulotly quality both go forward and throw a lot of punches. Williams is slightly in-expienrenced but looked good in beating Grant. I slightly favour Daws on points in a war

Londoner Lenny Daws defends his British light-welterweight title against unbeaten Scouser Steve Williams in a mouthwatering showdown at York Hall on July 9.
Daws won the title with a revenge 10-round knockout of Scotland's Barry Morrison last September, a man who had previously inflicted his only defeat in 23 outings (on points). At 31, Daws has matured into a real handful, strong and relentless and particularly good in the later championship stages of a 12-rounder, as he showed against Morrison and in a subsequent 12-round draw with fast-starting former European champion Jason Cook.
The same strength and relentlessness applies to the tall, aggressive, punch-a-second Williams, who registered a fine 10-round decision over Tottenham's former ABA champion Michael Grant on the Daws-Cook undercard in February to capture the English light-welterweight title and to take his record to 9-0 (3). The 26-year-old Williams is one of a number of Liverpool fighters rapidly carving their way through the domestic ranks, such as Tony Bellew, Stephen Smith and Carl Dilks, but Daws has a big edge in experience and his proven late-round strength separates him from the challenger.
Daws, on home soil, comes through a humdinger.

Throwback meets Throwback when Lenny Daws defends his British light-welterweight title against Steve Williams next month at York Hall.
The two are refreshingly uncomplicated in a sport which has changed before our very eyes over the last few years, with three-round, one-night constructions proving surprisingly and horribly popular, Contenders who are better known than champions, nobodies making overblown ring entrances to the kind of music that scares the dog, white world heavyweight champions, British world heavyweight champions, boxing 'fans' who walk out before the main event, dud Olympic gold medallists…
Thankfully, we have a few traditions still to be debunked and a few old-fashioned pros left, like Liverpool's Williams and Londoner Lenny, the latter a well-supported fellow from Morden who is probably more suited to 15-rounders than today's championship distance 12. Daws starts slow and builds it up, round by round, until he breaks the hearts of his opponents, roared on by his "Morden Massive". As a career light-welter Daws has beaten every man he has ever fought (almost), although he needed two attempts to get the better of Scotland's strong and capable Barry Morrison and also struggled in his last defence against the dangerous but battle-worn Jason Cook, who held him to a surprise 12-round draw.
Welshman Cook had earned his shot by cutting up and stopping former ABA champion Michael Grant – the man they said Amir Khan ducked - and Williams outpunched the same Grant on the way to a 10-round decision for the English light-welterweight title earlier this year, on the way to a shot of his own. "The Wallasey Express" is a hungry fighter boils down to 10 stone to get the most of his strength and aggression on the day as he tears into opponents and throws punch after punch, although he has yet to do 12 rounds and even to reach double figures in fights at 9-0 (3).
Nevertheless, Williams can fight and so can Daws and we can expect nothing less than a real tear-up, here. Daws has made York Hall his own personal fortress but you wonder if he is over the mountain at 31 (Williams is 26). The champion never really pushed on from a career-best win over Colin Lynes in 2006 and the question to be asked is, how much will the exuberant early pressure of Williams dent the late surge of Daws? The answer can be found on July 9.

Tony its interesting to hear you think it might be early for Steve, genuinely interested in your views on this , could you expand a bit on your reasons. I think its a tough fight to call and edge Daws but you seem a bit more certain that Steve won't win?

This could be the most bruising battle of 2010. Great match!

Daws must be at his peak now. Add his experience to that, he must be a favourite. I go for Daws to retain, but Williams hasn't put a foot wrong so far in the pros and is great to watch and will contest this tooth and nail.

Full respect to Williams for stepping it up so soon, but remember Daws did likewise when he first challenged for the British title too.

i think your right it will be the most bruising fight in 2010 and i think daws will not be able to take the pressure of williams and will fold by round 11

Why is Williams even still fighting? he now gets KOed by bums, and has taken way too much punishment in his career. He should hang them up.
