How are Paul Ryan and Ross Hale getting on?

Post by palooka »

Two of my favourite British boxers were Paul Ryan and Ross Hale; does anyone know how they are getting on?

Last time I saw Ross Hale he was covered in tatts and living the life of a surfer. Fair play to him :TU:
Might be wrong as it was some time ago but think he's a painter and decorator in Kingswood (suburb of Bristol) and involved in some coaching. One of the Sanigars is probably best placed to know.

Andreas Panayi, who broke Ross Hale's jaw, is fighting UFC.

Really? He was pretty good wasn't he.

Ross Hale was class and that fight (Ryan and Hale) was just shocking. It was a horrifying finish and watching as solid a champion as Hale unravel so spectacularly was a real 'moment' in my boxing education. Ryan was one of them guys who didn't look like he punched that hard but still got spectacular results. A forgotten result was his now impressive looking stoppage of a young Micheal Monaghan. Thaxtons win over Paul was just as frightening. Golden little era that and testimony that super talent isn't needed for great fights. Shame Ricky wasn't around just a couple of years earlier- Hale Vs Hatton or Ryan Vs Hatton would have being good fun. Or Neary for that matter.

Hale was the dog's for a while and it is a shame he wasn't pushed on a level prior to the Ryan mauling, which essentially finished him. I take nothing away from Paul, who took his chance in spectacular and fearless fashion. "It doesn't get any better than this," said Paul afterwards. He had those long, slender-looking arms, much like John H. Stracey. If he caught you with a shot at the end of the arm, it was KO time.

A real golden era for boxing back then.... Domestic boxing on a Tuesday night. One show in particular Lueshing-Saunders 2, Andries- Dunstan 2 and Ryan-Thaxton..... Bring back those days.

Ryan was a big puncher, no mistake. He had had one or both arms broken previously and as a result couldn't even straighten his punching arm fully. His problem was his chin couldn't hold a shot.

Tremendously exciting fighter to watch though, I remember watching him come up and nearly wipe out against light punching lightweight Palomino.

Hale was on a good streak and could also hit, I was amazed when Ryan did him in one but there was an early clash of heads which seemed to unsettle Hale and that was all she wrote.

Panayi was a tough nut, he broke Hale's jaw as someone already said and stopped him (?) never seen the fight and not sure if it exists or not, just remember the boxing news reports. I saw him fight ringside at the Dome against Brummie Shaun Cogan, cracking little rough and tumble small hall fight which ebbed and flowed but he just ground Cogan down. Within 5 minutes Panayi was showered and back at ringside watching the fights. Short, compact guy (tasty bird too) but just a touch limited and got (painfully) banjoed big time by high level operators.

I used to like Hale, after the Ryan fight he had a tough time back (given that most people thought he was nailed on to ice Ryan) and had a cuts stoppage against Denton then got whacked by an in-form McCreesh, who I never could take to.

The last I read, he was doing some coaching in the Bristol area, with a view to taking his trainer's license. Shunned the limelight and had grown his hair somewhat since his time on SKY..also added to his tats by all accounts.

It was certainly exciting times for us in Bristol around this era-the support that Ross had was incredible. There was always at least a couple of coaches even for his early career fights away from Bristol. We travelled all over the place, and a lot of the time he was on the coaches with us.The night he beat Holligan for the British Title was unforgettable-we sat front row,and at the end of the fight I was stood on the edge of the ring with the photographers :D
Really nice guy also as you would imagine, still involved with the fighting arts and still super-fit (does Iron man-triathlons in his spare time).

That's all great to hear - you should pass on all our regards and let him know he's fondly remembered by fans :TU:
