Duran vs. Leonard

Post by dan1030 »

No, not Sugar Ray, Benny.
Here's one for all you old-time fight afficianados. A freind who's sort of into, but not really all that into, boxing was recently asking me who the greatest all-time lightweight fighter was. My gut reaction--having grown up watching the guy--was to say Duran. Thinking it over though, I've read so much about Benny, though only ever seeing highlights of a few of his fights, that I'm curious what some of you who may have acess to more of his fights (or having read more extensively) think of Leonard's place among all-time lightweights.

Of course, I'm also interesting in hearing who you may think is the best ever, if not one of these two...if there's one thing I've learned on this forum, it'sthat there'll ALWAYS be a few dissenting opinions

I used to think that Benny Leonard was the second greatest lightweight, but when I saw the record and history of the GREAT JOE GANS, I HAVE NOW BENNY LEONARD RANKED #3 in my view.

Gans--definitely another guy worthy of consideration--good call! It's just really hard to rate someone I've never seen any footage of; tough to imagine what a style match up between two guys might look like when you've never actually seen one of them...

Leonard was an all-time great. The only film I've seen of him was part of his decision win vs. Lew Tendler (another great boxer). Leonard looked relaxed, smart and fast. In fact, both fighters looked remarkably modern - very smooth combination punching, none of that clubbing and grabbing that was so common back then.
But could Leonard take Duran? I don't think so. If Duran could overwhelm a great boxer like Ken Buchanan, he could get to Leonard. A tough match for Duran, and who knows maybe Benny could frustrate him enough to provoke a "no mas".
